Athanasios "Thanasi" Kokkinakis (born April 10, 1996 in Adelaide , South Australia ) is an Australian tennis player .

Childhood and youth

Thanasis Kokkinakis was born in 1996 in the South Australian metropolis of Adelaide. He is the son of Greek parents, both of whom come from the Peloponnese . Kokkinakis' father Trevor is originally from Kalamata , his mother Paraskevi is from Tripoli .

Career

Thanasi Kokkinakis started playing tennis at the age of eight. He has not yet won a single title at the ITF Men's Circuit . At the Hopman Cup 2013 he was a substitute for John Isner and Tommy Haas in three games . At the Australian Open 2013 he competed in men's doubles with Nick Kyrgios thanks to a wildcard . They were eliminated in the first round on their Grand Slam debut. In the junior singles competition, Thanasi Kokkinakis and doubles partner Kyrgios faced each other in the final, which Kyrgios won 7: 6, 4 and 6: 3. At the side of Kyrgios, he won the junior doubles competition in Wimbledon in June 2013 .

At the Australian Open 2014 he took part for the first time in the individual competition of a Grand Slam tournament and survived the first round of the main field with a wildcard after a four-set victory against Igor Sijsling . In the second round he met the top seeded Rafael Nadal , against whom he was clearly defeated in three sets. At the French Open 2014 he failed in the qualifying round and at the US Open 2014 he had to admit defeat in the second round of qualifying. His best performance so far was the third round at the 2015 French Open . Kokkinakis had to pause almost the entire year 2016 due to various injuries, so that he was able to compete in some tournaments with a protected ranking in the following year . In 2017 he won the doubles competition in Brisbane with Jordan Thompson . He reached his first individual final in August of the same year in Los Cabos , where he was defeated by Sam Querrey .

In 2014 Thanasi Kokkinakis was nominated for the first time for the Australian Davis Cup team . He made his first round debut against France .
