Nicholas "Nick" Hilmy Kyrgios (born April 27, 1995 in Canberra ) is an Australian tennis player .
Childhood and youth
Nick Kyrgios was born in Canberra in 1995 . He is the son of a Greek father and a half- Malaysian mother and the youngest of three siblings. He attended Radford College in Canberra until he was eight. He played both basketball and tennis by the time he was fourteen . He chose to play tennis because he judged himself to be better than that sport. At the age of 17, in January 2013, he won the junior tournament of the Australian Open ; he defeated his compatriot and friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in the final . In doubles, he had already won the junior competitions at the French Open and at Wimbledon the year before , alongside Andrew Harris . In 2013 he defended his Wimbledon title in doubles with Kokkinakis.
Career
Start of professional career (2012-2013)
Kyrgios made his first appearance on the big stage in 2012 when he qualified for the Australian Open when he lost his first round encounter against French Mathieu Rodrigues in three sets. The rest of the year he took part in various tournaments of the ITF Future Tour , where he once reached a semi-final and was able to collect some points for the world rankings . At the end of the year he was in 843 singles.
The year 2013 he started again with qualifications for tournaments of the ATP World Tour , but could not win his opening games in Brisbane or at the Australian Open . In doubles he and Thanasi Kokkinakis received a wildcard for the main field. They lost their match against the duo Rohan Bopanna and Rajeev Ram in straight sets. He then took part in a tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour for the first time and immediately reached the semi-finals in Adelaide, Australia . Thanks to these points, he made up almost 270 positions in the ranking. At his second Challenger tournament in Sydney Kyrgios reached the final and faced his compatriot Matt Reid , whom he defeated in two sets. He celebrated the first major success of his professional career.
At the French Open he was in the main field of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, as he had received a wildcard from the tournament management . He surprised with a first round win against the much better classified Radek Štěpánek , whom he defeated in three sets. Marin Čilić gave him no chance in the second round ; Kyrgios lost in three straight sets. At the US Open he made the leap into the main field via qualification, but was eliminated in the first round against David Ferrer . At the end of the year he was at position 182 in the world rankings , having made up over 650 places.
Victory against world number one and entry into the top 100 (2014)
The 2014 season started Kyrgios thanks to a wildcard at the Australian Open , where he defeated the German Benjamin Becker in four sets in the first round . In the second round, he delivered a five-sentence thriller with the then number 28 in the world, Benoît Paire , which ended after 3 hours and 20 minutes in favor of the French. Nevertheless, he was able to make up some places in the world rankings. In February he received a wild card from the tournament management in Memphis , but was eliminated in the first round. Then he went back to Challenger tournaments in Sarasota and Savannah, both of which he was able to win in a row. At the French Open he again used a wildcard, but lost his opening game against Milos Raonic in three sets. At the Challenger tournament in Nottingham , he made the jump into the main draw on the qualifying rounds. He played his way through to the final, which he won against his compatriot Samuel Groth in straight sets. With that he celebrated his fourth title on the ATP Challenger Tour .
On July 1, 2014, he defeated world number one Rafael Nadal in four sets in the round of 16 of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon with 7: 6 (7: 5), 5: 7, 7: 6 (7: 5) and 6: 3 . Kyrgios was the first player after Andrei Olchowski (against Jim Courier at Wimbledon 1992) and the first teenager since Rafael Nadal (against Roger Federer at the French Open 2005) to be number one in the world as a player outside the top 100 at a Grand -Slam event defeated. In the quarterfinals, Kyrgios failed to Milos Raonic in four sets.
First successes and entry into the top 20 (since 2015)
At the Australian Open , he made it to the quarter-finals for the first time in 2015, where he lost to Andy Murray in three sets. This season he reached a final on the ATP Tour for the first time, but he lost the final in Estoril to Richard Gasquet in straight sets. The 2016 season was successful for Kyrgios, he won his first title in Marseille after a 6-2, 7-6 against Marin Čilić . After the Miami Masters 2016 he moved into the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time. In August he won the Atlanta tournament against John Isner, and in the fall he took his third title of the season in Tokyo by beating David Goffin in three sets. This tournament victory was the first in the ATP World Tour 500 series . Shortly after this tournament he reached the best world ranking of his career with 13th place. At this rank he also finished the season.
In 2017, Kyrgios was particularly successful in Masters tournaments. In Miami he failed in the semifinals in a high-class match 6: 7, 7: 6, 6: 7 to Roger Federer. In Cincinnati he reached his first Masters final, which he lost to Grigor Dimitrov 3: 6, 5: 7. This season he finished in 21st place. The year 2018 was less successful for Kyrgios, the only highlight was the tournament victory at the beginning of the season in Brisbane against Ryan Harrison . He won his fifth career title against Alexander Zverev in March 2019 at the 500 tournament in Acapulco .
Davis Cup
In 2013, Kyrgios made his debut for the Australian Davis Cup team in the relegation game against Poland . In the 4-1 win, he lost the double against Chris Guccione in five sets. In the meaningless fifth game he faced Michał Przysiężny in the individual , who gave up the game due to injury when the score was 4-1 in the first set. In the first round encounter of the Davis Cup in 2014 against France , he lost his two individual games against Gaël Monfils and Richard Gasquet . In the end, the French won 5-0 and made it to the quarter-finals.
Conduct on the pitch
Kyrgios has received several warnings and fines for his undisciplined and spirited behavior on the pitch. After participating in the Shanghai Masters 2016 , he was initially banned for six weeks due to his unprofessional behavior. After Kyrgios agreed to seek sports psychology treatment, the suspension was shortened to three weeks.
At the tennis tournament in Rome in May 2019 , Kyrgios was initially warned for swearing, then threw his racket and a chair over the court and was disqualified from the game for this.
