Family and management
Alexander Zverev's parents come from Russia. His father is the former tennis player Alexander Swerew , who played in the Davis Cup for the Soviet Union from 1979 ; in 1985 he reached 175th place in the world rankings. His mother Irina Swerewa, née Fatejewa, was also a professional player and reached 380th place in the world rankings in 1993. In 1991 the family moved to Hamburg with their son, Mischa, who was born in 1987 . The son Alexander, born in 1997, left school after the tenth grade to concentrate fully on tennis. His main residence is in Monaco . Zverev's older brother Mischa is also a professional tennis player. Both began their club careers in the tennis division of Uhlenhorster HC in Hamburg, both were trained by their father.
His manager was Patricio Apey since he was 15 . Zverev unilaterally terminated the cooperation in spring 2019, which led to an ongoing legal dispute. In August 2019, Zverev announced that it would now be marketed by Team 8 , an agency founded by Roger Federer and his manager Tony Godsick. The collaboration ended in January 2021. His brother Mischa Zverev took over management together with Sergej Bubka junior .
In March 2021, his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea gave birth to a daughter. He has been in a relationship with Sophia Thomalla since 2021 .

Alexander Zverev achieved his first major success with his participation in the 2013 finals in the junior singles of the French Open . There he was defeated by the Chilean Christian Garín 4: 6 and 1: 6. He played his first match on the ATP World Tour in July 2013 at the age of 16 thanks to a wildcard at the tournament in Hamburg , where he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in two sets in the first round .
Zverev won his first major title in 2014 in the individual junior competition of the Australian Open with a clear 6: 3, 6: 0 against the American Stefan Kozlov . He got a wildcard for the Sparkassen Open 2014 in Braunschweig in July and won his first professional tournament at the age of 17 as 665th in the world rankings. He received 125 world ranking points and $ 15,300 in prize money for the win. Against the 89th in the world rankings, Paul-Henri Mathieu , he won the final with 1: 6, 6: 1 and 6: 4, after he had previously defeated the top 100 players Tobias Kamke and Andrei Golubew . In the world rankings he rose to 285th place. For the tournament in Hamburg he received another wildcard. Against Robin Haase , at this point 51st in the world rankings, he achieved his first victory in the main draw of an ATP tournament with 6: 0 and 6: 2. In the second round he defeated Mikhail Juschny, who was seeded at 5, for the first time a top 20 player. 2015: Promotion to the top 100
In Heilbronn , Zverev won his second individual challenger title in May 2015. As a result, he moved up to 85th place in the world rankings and was thus in the top 100 for the first time. In June 2015, Zverev took part in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. After he failed in the qualifying round at the 2014 US Open , the 2015 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open , he qualified directly for the Wimbledon Championships by advancing in the world rankings . In round one he prevailed against Teimuras Gabashvili in five sets , but was eliminated in the second round against Denis Kudla . At the US Open 2015 , Zverev failed in the first round to Philipp Kohlschreiber .
2016: First ATP Tour victory and promotion to the top 30
In the 2016 season he was eliminated from the Australian Open against Andy Murray in three sets in the first round. In February he reached the semi-finals in Montpellier . In the doubles competition he reached the final with his brother Mischa, which they lost to Mate Pavić and Michael Venus . In Munich he moved into a semi-final again. In March 2016 he made his debut against the Czech Republic for the German Davis Cup team . In June 2016, Zverev reached the final at the Gerry Weber Open . After Zverev defeated a top ten player in the semifinals with world number three Roger Federer for the first time in his career, he had to admit defeat to Florian Mayer 2: 6, 7: 5, 3: 6 in the final. Due to the good performance, Zverev moved up to 28th place in the world rankings and was therefore placed in the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon shortly afterwards . There he failed in the third round to Tomáš Berdych. In September 2016, Zverev was able to win his first ATP tournament in Saint Petersburg . At the ATP tournament in Montpellier in February 2017, Zverev triumphed both in singles against French Richard Gasquet and in doubles alongside his brother Mischa . This was his second tournament success in singles and his first in doubles. In May, Zverev won the BMW Open in Munich. At the Masters in Madrid he reached the quarter-finals and achieved his best world ranking position so far with 17th place. A week later he won his first Masters in Rome with a final victory over Novak Đoković . From the end of July, the former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero was part of Zverev's coaching team. At the first tournament with the new coach at his side, the Washington tournament , Zverev secured his first ATP World Tour 500 title at the beginning of August. Another week later, Zverev won the Masters of the Rogers Cup in Montreal with a 6: 4, 6: 3 final victory over Roger Federer . In the world rankings, he first achieved a new record in seventh place and a week later in sixth place. Although he failed in the second round of the US Open in New York , he overtook the injured Novak Đoković and Stan Wawrinka in the world rankings , which improved him to fourth. Despite mixed results in autumn, he was able to advance to third place in the world rankings before the season finale .
2018: Third Masters title in Madrid and victory at the ATP Finals
On May 6, 2018, Zverev won the final of the BMW Open in Munich against Philipp Kohlschreiber 6: 3 and 6: 3. Zverev traveled to the following French Open as second seed and met Dominic Thiem again in his first Grand Slam quarter-final. At Wimbledon he was eliminated in the third round against Ernests Gulbis . At the subsequent tournament in Washington, DC , he was able to defend his title with a two-set win against Alex De Minaur . This was followed by a round of 16 participation in Beijing , at the Masters in Shanghai he reached the semi-finals, as in Basel . In Paris he was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Masters tournament. Zverev qualified for the second time for the season-end tournament, the ATP Finals , and made it into the final for the first time, defeating world number one Novak Đoković 6: 4 and 6: 3. This was the first victory of a German player in this tournament since Boris Becker's success in 1995.
2019: Final at the Shanghai Masters
At the beginning of the season, Zverev reached the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the first time , where he was defeated by Milos Raonic in three sets. Then he moved into the final of the Acapulco tournament , which he lost to Nick Kyrgios in straight sets. At the Masters tournaments until September he was only in the quarter-finals in Madrid , where he failed in three sets against Stefanos Tsitsipas . At the French Open he was defeated in the quarterfinals Novak Đoković , in Wimbledon he had to admit defeat to qualifier Jiří Veselý in the first round . Due to the mixed sporting achievements and personal differences, Lendl and Zverev separated in July of that year. At the US Open , as in Australia, he reached the round of 16 and in October Zverev was in the final of the Shanghai Masters , where he was clearly defeated by Russian Daniil Medvedev 4: 6 1: 6. The next Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the season was interrupted for some time. In July, David Ferrer became Zverev's trainer. At the US Open in New York, he moved into the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career. In five sets he was again defeated by Thiem after he had still been able to decide the first two sets for himself. At the French Open , which was postponed from spring to autumn due to the pandemic , Zverev was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Italian Jannik Sinner . In October 2020, Zverev won the ATP tournament in Cologne . In the final he defeated the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime 6: 3, 6: 3. 2021: Olympic champion in Tokyo and second triumph at the ATP Finals
At the beginning of the year, Zverev separated from Ferrer and his father became a coach again. In March 2021, Zverev defeated the top seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6: 4, 7: 6 in the final in Acapulco . Two months later, Zverev achieved the second victory in the Madrid final after 2018. At the following French Open he reached the semifinals for the first time, where he was eliminated against Tsitsipas. On July 30, 2021, Zverev defeated the top seeded Novak Đoković at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after four wins in the semifinals . With his subsequent victory in the final against Karen Khachanov 6: 3 and 6: 1, he secured the gold medal. This makes him the first German to win the men's individual tennis competition at the Summer Olympics, which Steffi Graf had already achieved in the women's competition in Seoul in 1988 . He then won the Masters tournament in Cincinnati for the first time , having not won a single match in the previous six appearances. At the US Open he failed in the semifinals to Đoković. In Vienna he won his 300th match on the tour in the round of 16 and secured the title after a two-set win against Frances Tiafoe . Around three weeks later he won the ATP Finals for the second time with a final victory over Daniil Medvedev . In the semifinals, he had previously defeated world number one Novak Đoković. This season he was able to win each of his six finals and ended the year in third place in the world rankings for the first time.
