Adriatic Tour 2020
The Adria Tour 2020 was a tournament series in tennis that was launched by world number one Novak Đoković during the COVID-19 pandemic . It was planned to hold the competitions on four weekends between June 12th and July 5th in Serbia , Croatia , Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina . The proceeds from the viewing revenue were intended to benefit various charities. Due to numerous infections with the coronavirus, the tour was canceled on June 23, 2020 after the second stop in Zadar , Croatia . The final there did not take place either.
mode
Eight participants started at each station, divided into two groups. Within the groups everyone played against everyone. It was played in best-of-three mode, with the Fast4 tennis format being played in contrast to official tournaments of the ATP Tour . When the score was 3: 3, there was a tie-break . Each player played two group games on the first day of competition. On the second day, the final group game followed and, if applicable, the final game, for which the first two groups qualified.
Venues and dates
With the exception of the last station in Banja Luka, the official competitions always took place on Saturdays and Sundays. An exhibition mixed doubles was played at the start in Belgrade. There was also an exhibition match between Novak Đoković and Damir Džumhur in Sarajevo . On June 13, it was announced that the competitions would not take place in Montenegro. In a statement, the organizers announced that the Adriatic tour would not be continued due to the corona cases.

Corona cases
On June 21, 2020, Grigor Dimitrov , who had played at the first stop in Belgrade and a game at the second stop in Zadar, made public that he had tested positive for the corona virus after returning to his home in Monte Carlo . The final in Zadar was then canceled. All the people involved in the organization and the players show no symptoms and the epidemiological recommendations have always been followed, according to the organizers in a statement.
Only a short time later it became known that Borna Ćorić was also infected with COVID-19. In contrast to Dimitrov, however, he had only participated in the station in Zadar, while Dimitrov also started in Belgrade. In addition, two trainers are said to have been infected with the virus. According to Serbian media reports, the initiator Novak Đoković is said to have initially refused to take his own COVID-19 test. On the morning of June 23, 2020 it was announced that Viktor Troicki, a third participant in the Adria Tour, had tested positive for the virus. At noon on the same day, the tournament initiator Novak Đoković was also infected . His wife Jelena also tested positive for COVID-19, while the couple's children received negative test results.
The German participant Alexander Zverev went into self-quarantine despite a negative test and apologized in the social networks "to everyone [...] whom I put in a possible risk by participating in this tour".
First stop in Belgrade
To kick off the Adria Tour, an exhibition mixed doubles took place on June 12, 2020, in which the initiator Novak Đoković competed against Olga Danilović and Nenad Zimonjić together with the former Serbian tennis player Jelena Janković . The pianist Lola Astanova and the Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović also performed . The coaches of the two big football clubs in Belgrade Dejan Stanković ( Red Star ) and Savo Milosevic ( FK Partizan ) also attended the event at the start of the Adriatic Tour.
game schedule
The competitions were held with spectators, which caused criticism in times of the COVID-19 pandemic .

Called off |
Planned third stop in Montenegro
On June 13th, the tournament director of the Adria Tour Đorđe Đoković announced that no games could take place in Montenegro. The organizers could not have come to an agreement with the local authorities, according to a message that was published on the homepage of the tournament series. According to Đoković, the main obstacle was that Serbian citizens still cannot enter Montenegro. A place for the event was also not found, although the organizers offered to bring all the materials necessary for the event, such as stands or the sand for the courts. It was also planned to bring referees and linesmen to Montenegro.
Planned fourth stop in Banja Luka
Due to the corona cases in the vicinity of the Adria Tour, it was ended prematurely, so that the competitions in Banja Luka were not held.
Planned fifth stop in Sarajevo
The last stop of the Adria Tour 2020 in Sarajevo, where Novak Đoković and Damir Džumhur were supposed to play a show match, were canceled due to the corona cases, including by Đoković.
Criticism in the run-up to the event
For hosting the event, isiertoković was sometimes harshly criticized. Among other things because before the start of the competitions in Serbia he organized a football tournament with various participants in which the generally applicable measures against the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic were disregarded. The Serb also greeted arriving participants at the airport with a warm hug. In addition, Đoković did not take part in a video conference in which the further course of action regarding the continuation of the ATP and WTA tour was discussed. The Vice President of the German Tennis Federation (DTB), Dirk Hordorff , and the American Danielle Collins , among others, expressed sharp criticism.
