The 2016 Western & Southern Open was a tennis tournament held August 14-21, 2016 in Mason, Ohio near Cincinnati . It was part of the ATP World Tour 2016 and was played outdoors on hard courts. This season it was the seventh of nine tournaments in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category . At the same time, the women's Western & Southern Open took place in Cincinnati .

The defending champions were Roger Federer in the singles , who was unable to defend the title due to injury, and in doubles Daniel Nestor and Édouard Roger-Vasselin . Andy Murray and Marin Čilić contested the final , which the latter won 6: 4 and 7: 5.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each received a bye into the second round.

qualification

The qualification took place on August 13th and 14th, 2016. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There was also a lucky loser.
