Jean-Julien Rojer (born August 25, 1981 in Willemstad , Curaçao , Netherlands Antilles ) is a Dutch tennis player who has been playing for the Netherlands since 2012 . Previously, he played under the flag of the Netherlands Antilles (2002-2010) and Curaçaos (2010-2012).

Career

Jean-Julien Rojer showed his talent for tennis at a young age. At the age of 14 he won the Club Championship of Racing Club Team Curaçao and the national championships of the Netherlands Antilles. Then he attended UCLA and was there with Marcin Matkowski the best doubles at the ITA . In 2002 he led their double ranking and was number 35 in the singles.

In the same year he became a professional and was mainly used in future tournaments. Although he won several tournaments in this category in singles in the following years, he was more successful in doubles. His breakthrough to the expanded world elite came in 2008 when he found his doubles partner in Johan Brunström . Together, the two won a number of Challenger tournaments and in 2009 reached the final of four ATP tournaments. Within two years, Rojer improved from 18th place (end of 2007) to 43rd place.

In 2010 he achieved the first tournament victory on the ATP Tour in Tokyo with his new doubles partner Eric Butorac . In the same year, the two won another title in Stockholm . At the beginning of the 2011 season, Rojer achieved the best result in a Grand Slam tournament; at the Australian Open he reached the semi-finals with Butorac, which they lost against the eventual titleholders Bob and Mike Bryan . During the season, the duo won the tournaments in Estoril , Nice and Kuala Lumpur . Despite these successes, Butorac and Rojer surprisingly parted ways at the end of the season. Butorac chose the Brazilian Bruno Soares as a new partner, while Rojer started the 2012 season with the Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi .

Rojer has been playing for the Netherlands since 2012; the National Olympic Committee of the Netherlands Antilles had disbanded and the players had to decide whether they wanted to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games for Aruba or for the Netherlands . Rojer chose the Netherlands.

The new partnership with Qureshi began with little success at first. After they reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open , a number of first and second round defeats followed. Only in the clay court season did the duo gain momentum; they reached the semi-finals in Casablanca and Nice before they celebrated their first joint title in Estoril against Julian Knowle and David Marrero . In Roland Garros they were even in the semi-finals when they were eliminated by the Bryan brothers. The grass season began with a title win in Halle . In the course of the season they could not record another tournament victory, but Rojer qualified for the first time in his career for the ATP World Tour Finals in London, where he failed with his partner in the preliminary round. At the Australian Open 2013 Qureshi and Rojer were eliminated in the round of 16. In March, however, they had a great success when they defeated Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the final of the Miami Masters ; for Rojer it was the first victory in a tournament of this category.

At the French Open he won his first Grand Slam title with Anna-Lena Grönefeld in the mixed competition in 2014 . He denied the season with a new partner, Horia Tecau . They won a total of eight titles, including three in the World Tour 500 category , and were in another final. In 2015 they won a tournament and also reached another final. They reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and the French Open . In Wimbledon they finally managed to win their first title in a Grand Slam tournament.

Davis Cup

Rojer competed in the Davis Cup for the Netherlands Antilles between 1998 and 2007 . In 31 matches he won 28 out of 34 singles and 14 out of 17 doubles. This made him the team's most successful player and record player at the same time. After the dissolution of the Antilles and Rojer's decision to play for the Netherlands in the future, he was appointed to the squad of the Dutch Davis Cup team for the first time in the 2012 season .
