The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the association of college tennis in the United States .

history

The ITA was founded in 1956 by JD Morgan . You initially had fewer than 20 trainers. Until 1992 it was known as the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association . The ITA was located on the Princeton University campus for 16 years . In 2000 he was relocated to Skillman , New Jersey .

In the beginning, the coaches of the NCAA Division I teams organized themselves in the ITA . At the end of the 1970s, the association also opened up to coaches from smaller schools and women's teams.

structure

The decisions of the ITA are made by the Board of Directors . In addition to the executive director of the association, this includes around 20 tennis coaches. Some members still belong to a committee ( ITA Executive Committee ). This acts as an advisory body, which exchanges information with the Board of Directors every December.

tasks

Since 1985 the ITA has hosted an annual convention for college tennis coaches. There is an opportunity to discuss “the important problems in college tennis”. The ITA Rules Committee debates possible rule changes. The updated rulebook is published annually in January. The ITA is also developing new tournament formats.

The ITA annually elects the All-America Team and operates two halls of fame : one is the ITA Women's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in Williamsburg , Virginia , which opened in 1995 ; on the other hand, the ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame, which opened in Athens , Georgia in 1983 .

Tournaments

The ITA is responsible for the organization of numerous tournaments. The ITA Regional Championships are held in September and October each year . This includes 24 tournaments intended for first-class colleges. The winners and finalists of these competitions qualify for the USTA / ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships , which are always held in November at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center . 64 of the regional tournaments are intended for the smaller schools. This is where the winners qualify for the USTA / ITA National Small College Championships in October. The ITA also organizes a tournament in the field of wheelchair tennis and the ITA All-American Championships .

ITA rankings

The ITA is the editor of the official rankings of college tennis, the ITA college tennis rankings . These exist in the field of women's and men's tennis.

Which of the lists a university appears in depends on its membership. The majority of universities belong to the NCAA . The rival association NAIA has fewer members . Separate rankings will be published for both associations. The universities that belong to the NCAA are also part of one of three classes (Division I, II and III), for which there are separate rankings. There is also a ranking list for junior / community colleges.

In addition to these team rankings are available for individual athletes the singles rankings and double the doubles rankings . The classification is based on the same model.
