Reilly Opelka (born August 28, 1997 in St. Joseph , Michigan ) is an American tennis player .

Personal

Opelka started playing tennis at the age of six. His idol in professional tennis was Juan Martín del Potro . He has a sister and lives in Palm Coast, Florida .

Career

Opelka won the junior title at Wimbledon in 2015 . After he had to fend off a match point against Alex De Minaur in the first round , he subsequently defeated four seeded players u. a. the then youth world number one Taylor Fritz and defeated Mikael Ymer 7: 6, 6: 4 in the final . He was also in the final of the doubles competition that same year.

Opelka mainly plays on the Future Tour and the Challenger Tour . In 2016 he made his debut in singles on the ATP World Tour as a lucky loser at the US Men's Clay Court Championships 2016 in Houston . He lost 4: 6, 6: 7 against Sam Querrey , in doubles he made it to the quarterfinals, where he and Tommy Paul were defeated by the Bryan brothers Bob and Mike . He made his doubles debut last year at the US Open with Taylor Harry Fritz as partner. They were defeated by Marcus Daniell and Jonathan Marray in three sentences. In November, Opelka won its first Challenger tournament in Charlottesville .

In February 2019, Opelka celebrated its first title on the ATP World Tour. In New York he defeated the Canadian qualifier Brayden Schnur in three sets in the final . In the same year he made his debut for the US Davis Cup team .

With a height of 2.11 meters (according to ATP), Opelka - together with Ivo Karlović - is the tallest player to have competed on the ATP World Tour so far, which is why he often goes with his compatriot John Isner (height: 2.08 m) is compared.
