João Sousa (born March 30, 1989 in Guimarães ) is a Portuguese tennis player .

Career

So far, Sousa has achieved first successes, especially on the Challenger Tour . In 2010 he won his first title in doubles when he was victorious with Leonardo Tavares in Tampere against the Latvian duo Andis Juška and Deniss Pavlovs . The first individual title followed in 2011 in Fürth , where he defeated the German champion Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets. He won his second individual title in April 2012 in Mersin, Turkey, against Javier Martí 6: 4, 0: 6, 6: 4. Sousa was able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 2012 at the French Open . In the opening round, however, he failed to Marcel Granollers in four sets. He made his debut on the ATP World Tour in Estoril in 2008 when he successfully qualified for the main draw. In the game against Oliver Marach , he clearly had the upper hand and clearly won 6: 1, 6: 3. In the subsequent round of 16 against Frederico Gil, he lost in two sets. Only four years later, in 2012, did he qualify again for a main field on the World Tour. In Barcelona he moved into the main draw of the ATP 500 tournament and defeated the Russian Igor Kunitsyn in two sets in the first round . In the second round it was again Frederico Gil who knocked Sousa out of the tournament. Gil just won in three sets. In September 2013 he was the first Portuguese to win an individual tournament on the ATP Tour in Kuala Lumpur . In the final he defeated Julien Benneteau in three sets.

Sousa has been playing for the Portuguese Davis Cup team since 2008 .

Remarks

João Sousa should not be confused with the Brazilian tennis player João Souza, who is almost a year older . You have already stood together several times in the main draw of the same tournament; They met for the first time at the ATP tournament in Geneva in May 2015.

There is also another Portuguese tennis player named Pedro Sousa who is not related to him. João Sousa was able to win the two previous duels with him clearly in two sets.
