Australia took part in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam , the Netherlands . Due to economic problems, the state of Australia was only able to provide funding for ten athletes as the cost of the trip was 720 Australian dollars . Nevertheless, other athletes were allowed to participate, on the condition that the costs were covered by either private or municipal donors. This allowed eight other athletes to participate, including Dunc Gray , who later won a bronze medal.
