Penelope Jane Taylor (born May 24, 1981 in Mount Waverley , Melbourne ) is a former Australian basketball player who was active in the WNBA from 2001 to 2016 . Her greatest achievement with the Australian national team was winning the 2006 World Cup , where she was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. After the 2016 WNBA season , she ended her professional basketball career.
Career
Australia (Women's National Basketball League)
Like many of Australia's top female basketball players, Taylor began her career with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) team. After playing there from 1997 to 1999, she moved to the Dandenong Rangers team for the 1999 to 2002 seasons . From 2001 she played in the US WNBA in the summer months. After the 2002 season, she played in the WNBA season break for the time being with European teams. Only after the 2014 WNBA season did she return to her hometown club Dandenong Rangers in the Australian WNBL for two seasons.
Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
2001 Taylor moved from the Australian WNBL to the WNBA to the Cleveland Rockers . After she was only used as a substitute at the beginning, her playing times increased and from the 2002 season she was regularly in the team's starting line-up. She played for the Rockers until 2003, after which the franchise was dissolved. In the subsequent Dispersal Draft , it was selected first by the Phoenix Mercury . There, too, she was immediately one of the pillars of the team. With this team, Taylor became WNBA champions in 2007 and 2009 . In 2008 , she did not play any games in the WNBA. In 2012, Taylor tore a cruciate ligament in a Euroleague match and missed the 2012 WNBA season . In 2014 she won her third WNBA title with Phoenix Mercury. Also in the 2015 season , she played no games for the Mercury. On her return to Phoenix in 2016 , she led the team again to the playoff semi-finals.
After the 2016 WNBA season , she ended her professional basketball career. Up to this point, she played in 13 WNBA seasons in the regular season 355 games, it was 277 May in the starting lineup and scored 4606 points, 1559 rebounds and 1053 assists. She was always in the starting line-up in 50 playoff games and scored 670 points, 243 rebounds and 181 assists. In 2002, 2007 and 2011 she was appointed to the WNBA's All-Star Team.
Europe
During the WNBA season break, Taylor played like many WNBA players regularly in Europe. Since 2005 she has been on the field for teams from Italy, Russia and Turkey. With her team she was able to win the national championship in Italy and Russia once, in Turkey she even won two championships. Most recently she played for the Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the 2011/12 season .
National team
Taylor was from 1998 to 2016 a member of the Australian national team and won this in 2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing respectively, the Olympic silver medal. She missed the 2012 Olympic Games due to injury. At her last international tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, she finished fifth with the team. At the basketball world championships in 2006 , she celebrated her greatest success in the national dress with the Australian women by winning the title. At the 2002 and 2014 World Championships , she played her part in winning the bronze medal. At the 2010 Basketball World Cup , she finished fifth with the Australian team. In 1997, Taylor won the silver medal with the Australian junior team at the World Youth Championship.
Private
In December 2005 she married the Brazilian volleyball player Rodrigo Gil. The marriage has meanwhile been divorced. In May 2017 she married her former teammate Diana Taurasi .
