Erich Ubelacker

Erich Übelacker (* 1936 in Austria ) is an Austrian astronomer and author .

Life

Übelacker studied physics and astronomy in Stuttgart and Paris , where he also received his doctorate . He then worked for the Carl Zeiss company in Oberkochen for nine years , including as head of the planetarium department and the telescope laboratory . During this time, he and his team developed equipment for US astronaut training and advised many cities around the world on the planning and installation of planetariums .

From 1975 to 2000 he was director of the Hamburg Planetarium , the number of which tripled during the period. He was temporarily active as a UNESCO consultant for planetariums with a focus on East Asia. As part of his extensive work in the mediation of astronomy, he moderated 101 scientific TV programs for NDR television and was involved in around 300 other programs. There he introduced the combination weather report - starry sky, which was broadcast in the program N3 from 4 for two years.

He is the author or co-author of nine what-is-what books, has written many articles in magazines and daily newspapers, and was co-editor of the magazine Sterne und Weltraum .

Since his time as head of the Hamburg planetarium, he has maintained contacts with amateur astronomers and was part-time chairman of the Society for Folk Astronomy (GvA eV) in Hamburg from 1977 to 1983 .

Since his retirement in 2000 he has lectured on cruise ships.
