The Australian national basketball team for women , mostly called Opals in Australia or currently Jayco Opals due to sponsorship , represents Australia in international basketball competitions. Since the mid-1990s, it has been among the absolute best in the world, the greatest success being the 2006 world championship .

history

At the end of the 1970s and 1980s, the team around Jenny Cheesman and Robyn Maher celebrated their first successes such as the semi-finals at the 1979 World Cup and the 1988 Olympic Games. Michele Timms is one of the first Australian star players , who played at Lotus Munich and BTV Wuppertal was active. Together with Sandy Brondello and Rachael Sporn , she was instrumental in the successes of the Australian national team in the mid and late 1990s, such as winning bronze medals at the 1996 Olympic Games and the 1998 World Cup. More Australian players made it into the WNBA in the following years . During those years, Australia reached the finals of the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics and won the 2006 World Cup , led by Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor .
