The 1997 Oceania Basketball Championship , the eighth women's Oceania Basketball Championship , was held between June 1 and 4, 1997 in Palmerston North and Wellington , New Zealand , which was the fourth time the championship was held. The winner was the team from Australia , which could win the title for the seventh time. In the finals was New Zealand are clearly beaten. For the first time New Caledonia , and thus a third team, took part in the tournament.

First, the preliminary round was played in a group of three teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played two games (a total of three games were played).
