The 1997 Oceania Basketball Championship , the eighth women's Oceania Basketball Championship , was held between June 1 and 4, 1997 in Palmerston North and Wellington , New Zealand , which was the fourth time the championship was held. The winner was the team from Australia , which could win the title for the seventh time. In the finals was New Zealand are clearly beaten. For the first time New Caledonia , and thus a third team, took part in the tournament.

First, the preliminary round was played in a group of three teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team played two games (a total of three games were played). There were two points for each win and one point for a defeat. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided . The two teams with the highest points moved into the final and played the 1997 women's basketball Oceania champion.
