Oceania Basketball Championship
The FIBA Oceania Championship of Men (officially FIBA Oceania Championship ) is the world governing body of FIBA discharged continental championship for Oceania in basketball . Usually it consists of a final round of a maximum of three games between Australia and New Zealand , from 1993 to 1999 there was only one final. In 2009, a first leg and a second leg were played. If there are more than two participants, a group stage is held beforehand, in which the teams each compete against each other once. Record title holder is Australia, which won 19 of the previous 22 events and remained undefeated in 28 games from 1979 to 2001, although it did not start in 1999, when it was already qualified as host for the Olympic Games . In 2001 New Zealand was able to prevail against Australia twice for the first time and thus win the title.
The championship has been held every two years since 1971 and is also the oceanic qualifying tournament for the basketball world championship or the summer Olympic games . Until 2003, only the winner qualified for the following tournament. Due to the successful performance of New Zealand at the 2002 World Cup , which had reached the semi-finals, and the simultaneous absence of the Australian team, Oceania was awarded a second World Cup starting place. Two teams from Oceania also qualified for the first time for the 2004 Olympic Games, but this second starting place was replaced for the 2008 Games by a starting place at the pre-Olympic tournament, which was held for the first time since 1976.
