Women's Basketball Oceania Championship
The FIBA Oceania Championship of Women (officially FIBA Oceania Women's Championship ) is the world governing body of FIBA discharged continental championship for Oceania in basketball . Usually it consists of only one final round of a maximum of three games between Australia and New Zealand . If there are more than two participants, a group stage is held beforehand, in which the teams each compete against each other once. Record title holder is Australia, which has been unbeaten since the tournament was founded (the team did not take part in the tournament in 1993 and 1999).
The championship has been held every two years since 1993 and is also the oceanic qualifying tournament for the basketball world championship or the summer Olympic games . Before that, the tournament was usually held every four years. In 1999 no tournament was played because Australia, as the host of the Olympic Games, already qualified for the Olympics, did not take part and American Samoa withdrew its participation. New Zealand won without a fight.
Except for 1999 and 2007, only the winner qualifies for the following tournament. Since, as mentioned above, Australia hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics and was therefore automatically placed for the tournament, two teams from Oceania started with New Zealand. It was similar in 2007, when Australia, as reigning world champions, had already qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics . By reaching the finals, the New Zealand team also qualified for the game. Fiji was allowed to start as the third-placed team in the qualifying tournament . The second-placed team has qualified for the Olympic qualification tournament since 2015.
