Marius "Maurice" Gallay (born December 25, 1902 in Eaux-Vives , † August 15, 1982 in Marseille ) was a French football player .

Club career

Gallay was born in French-speaking Switzerland and began playing football for the Geneva clubs FC Genève and Servette FC Genève . In 1921 he went to France and joined Lyon Olympique Universitaire there. However, he only remained loyal to the club for a year, as he then temporarily gave up playing football in favor of rowing . In 1924, however, he started again and was accepted into the team of FC Cette . Cette was one of the strongest clubs in France, although there was no national league at the time. In 1925, the left winger moved to Olympique Marseille . With his new club, he played a good role in the cup competition and contributed with three goals in a 5-0 semi-final victory against Stade Français that the French Cup final in 1926 succeeded. In this Gallay and his teammates defeated AS Valentigney , with which the left winger won a national title for the first time. In the cup final in 1927 a 3-0 win against US Quevilly succeeded in defending the title, to which Gallay contributed the goal to the 2-0 intermediate result. In the following years it was not possible to build on these successes, but in 1929 Marseille became French amateur champions.

With Division 1 , a first division in France was introduced in 1932. This established professional football in France and also included Galley's club Olympique Marseille. The left winger was on the field when his team started the competition on September 11, 1932 with a 2-1 win over Olympique Lille . In the early stages of the 1932/33 season he was a regular player, but was last called on the eighth match day against Club Français and then not considered. By then he had played a total of seven top division games and scored one goal. In 1934 he turned his back on the club and moved to the amateur club Crédit Lyonnais Marseille to take on a role as player- coach.

National team

Shortly before his first cup win with Marseille, Gallay made his debut for the French national team on April 11, 1926 at the age of 23 . Subsequently, he was called up regularly, where he only participated in friendly games. After his international career began with a 4: 3 win against Belgium and the following two games were won with his participation, he experienced only draws and defeats in all subsequent games. Some results were extremely clear, for example Gallay and the French lost 6-0 to England in 1927 and a few weeks later even 1:13 against Hungary. His last international match he played again on May 26, 1929 against Belgium; it ended in a 4-1 defeat. In the overall balance, Gallay was able to show 13 A-internationals and score one goal.
