Poysdorf wine festival

The Poysdorfer Winzerfest is one of the largest wine festivals in Lower Austria . It takes place every year in Poysdorf in the Weinviertel . It has taken place in its current form since 1958 in the second week of September from Thursday to Sunday in the Poysdorfer Kellergstetten .

history

In 1928, the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Poysdorf held a harvest festival on October 28th at the end of the grape harvest and organized a pageant with decorated floats through the city. In 1952, a harvest festival and winegrowers festival with a pageant was held, which was then repeated annually. In 1958, the Poysdorf district winegrowing association organized the first Poysdorf district winegrowers' festival. A trade fair was held at the same time as the festival. The highlight was the winegrowers' parade with floats from the Poysdorf associations and the surrounding towns. In 1971, the municipality of Poysdorf took over the event and founded its own festival committee, consisting of representatives from the municipality, the district winegrowing association and the associations. Since 1984 a celebrity from film, television or sport has been elected president of the wine festival. The festival attracts around 30,000 visitors every year.

procedure

The wine festival begins on Thursday evening with the grape pounding in the Kellergstetten . In all cellars there are wine bars from winemakers from Poysdorf and the neighboring wine-growing communities. The highlight of the festival is Sunday with the inauguration of the new President of the Wine Festival, the afternoon procession and the end on the festival square in Gstetten .

Wine Festival President

In 1984 the tradition of festival presidents began with Kammersänger Heinz Holecek . The president is elected by the festival committee and usually travels to the wine festival Sunday for lunch with the Poysdorf mayor. The inauguration takes place in the grandstand. The previous year’s president - if absent, the wine queen - hands over the chain of presidents and the new president of the wine festival gives his inaugural speech. After the vintner festival parade, he moves to the Gstetten with the guests of honor and traditionally celebrates in all the cellars.
