Günter Tolar (born July 9, 1939 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian actor , television presenter and author.

Life

Günter Tolar grew up in Bad Wimsbach-Neydharting and attended elementary school there. The family moved to Linz in 1949 , where he attended the humanistic grammar school with Latin, Greek and English. In the last two school years he was also active in the “Musischen Klub” at the Volkshochschule Linz. The director Robert Schollum had a noticeable impact on him and also used him as a moderator at events and concerts. After graduating from high school in 1957, he moved to Vienna and began studying in September, each with the aim of teaching as a license to his parents' wishes, music at the music academy as well as German and history at the University of Vienna . In 1960/61 he gradually broke off his studies, was active in the Association of Austrian Socialist Students and got to the theater through various odd jobs. First he was an extra in the theater in der Josefstadt and at the Volkstheater and stage worker in the Vienna Volksoper . In 1961 he began then as assistant director of Leon Epp on popular theater and worked subsequently as assistant directors for the guest of the house. At the same time he studied drama with Hans Normann at the Prayner Conservatory , which he graduated with honors in 1963.

In the same year Tolar moved to the Theater der Jugend and, contrary to the director's promises to be allowed to work as an actor or assistant director, became “only” stage manager . As such, he also worked for two years at the newly opened Theater an der Wien , about which he wrote a book years later. Also in 1963 Tolar first appeared on television in the small role of a suitor in King Drosselbart , directed by Otto Anton Eder . The following year he was drawn to cabaret, where he first worked with Peter Lodynski and Miriam Dreifuss (* 1940). Soon they joined forces with the Graz group Der Würfel , where Kuno Knöbl and Dieter Gogg played, later also Herwig Seeböck , Cissy Kraner and Hugo Wiener for a year when they fell out with Karl Farkas and finally Felix Dvorak . The performances took place in the basement of what was then Café Savoy, Himmelpfortgasse  27, and many television programs were produced or recorded there under the name Würfel . In addition, Tolar also worked as an actor in the so-called "big" shows by Heinz Conrads .

After Kuno Knöbl became head of entertainment at ORF in 1967, he brought Tolar to television in 1969. Since then he has worked as a permanent freelancer at ORF and was hired in 1984. In Austria, he was mainly responsible for the moderation of the quiz programs Wer dreimal lies (1973–1977), Rätselbox (1977–1980) and Made in Austria (1980–1992) and most recently through appearances on the comedy show Tohuwabohu (1990–1998) known. In the background he took part in countless programs such as Good Evening on Saturday with Heinz Conrads , Dalli Dalli , Musikantenstadl , Oh du mein Österreich , That only happened once and wrote countless scripts for a wide variety of programs. At times he was also in charge of broadcasting in the entertainment department at ORF . After his retirement he was a member of the newly created Public Council from 2001 to 2006. Since his retirement he has also been chairman of the working group for the promotion of musical entertainment in Austria , the purpose of which is to host the Grand Prix of Folk Music every year . And since 1983 until today moderated tolars to the Association of Vienna Adult Education which repeatedly held in Quiz Who knows wins for people over 55, which is also in Radio Wien is sent.

In 1991 his husband Norbert (* 1945), with whom he had lived for 15 years, took his own life out of fear of the outbreak of AIDS . As a result, Günter Tolar decided the public coming out in the journal News of 17 December 1992 and reported on his fate. Since it was the first such outing of a celebrity in Austria, it caused a sensation, but also achieved a strong public awareness. He processed the experience gained in the partnership and with the death of his friend in the form of the autobiographical novel Sein Mann (1993), which quickly landed in the bestseller lists and stayed in the top ten for almost half a year. But he also received anonymous threats, abuse and a letter dated March 25, 1993 from his boss, ORF General Director Gerd Bacher , that "the public display of your intimate life ... disgusts the public ... public confessions of prominent ORF members about their sex life are ... undesirable ... so there is no place for your behavior - because it is damaging to the company ... I would be very grateful if I did not have the opportunity to take further consequences ”. An open threat of dismissal, because the argument "damaging to the company" would have been a reason for dismissal without notice. However, Bacher was obviously left with his own interpretation in the company's management, as nothing happened and Tolar retired on August 1, 1999. On the subject of same-sex partnerships, he also appeared in Who Has Shipped the Cards (1994) and on the subject of AIDS in society To hell with me! (1999).

Since then, Tolar has been involved in public for homosexuals and AIDS sufferers. He founded the emergency aid association Positiv Leben , which financially supports HIV- positive people and people suffering from AIDS in emergency situations with small amounts. On November 24, 2007, he resigned from his functions at SoHo, where he “worked tirelessly at all levels, including the highest representatives of the Republic of Austria, to deal with the concerns of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people Demanding a high degree of instinct, but with gentle pressure and sometimes unconventional methods ”.

After the death of her mother Martha (* 1909) in 1990, his brother Gerhard (* 1944) found numerous previously unknown replies from authorities and offices from 1933 to 1949. She was a teacher with heart and soul in Wels and received from various Pages awards for their services. Soon after the annexation of Austria in 1938, however, she was expelled from employment because she was a second-degree Jewish half-breed . His father Leopold (1910–1994, commercial clerk) was soon drafted because of the war, and so, as the mother of one and then two children, she fought for the survival of the family on her own and pulled out all the stops to be able to teach again. However, she detested denying her Jewish grandfather or “buying herself Aryan”. After the end of the war, she was able to return to her profession and received another award in 1946. Later she also became a primary school director. Her family between 1938 and 1945 had never been discussed before. The brothers rummaged in offices and archives for the counterparts of the letters, got to know their mother from a new perspective, and Günther put together the book Direkt vom Herzen - a declaration of love , published in 2005 . The title comes from one of her letters, which is very emotional: "Excuse me for pressing so hard, but I am writing straight from the heart ..."

The trained actor has been back on stage since 2006 - in autumn 2006 with Waltraut Haas , Peter Lodynski u. a. in the play "How does John Wayne get into a retirement home?" at the Gloria Theater in Vienna. 2007 also at the Gloria Theater with "So looks out!" and in summer 2007 at the Bucklige Welt witch's summer in Bromberg (Lower Austria) . In the spring of 2010 he played at the Volkstheater Wien, in the summer of the same year he was seen in a leading role at the Winnetou Festival in Winzendorf . In 2011 he played Madame Pernelle in Molières Tartuffe at the Theater-Center Forum Vienna, and took part in two films ("Maybe in Another Life" and "Echte Wiener 2 - die Depperten und die G Spritzten"). 2012 again in the Theater-Center-Forum, 2013 again in the Volkstheater (in the districts) and in the Theater-Center-Forum. In between, guest roles in various TV series.

He has been with his husband Gerald (* 1962) since 2002, and in 2010 they both entered into a registered partnership . They live with two dogs named Wally and Leon in Vienna and Berndorf .

Although he deep inside the Christian, especially the Catholic culture feels he belongs, joined it in January 2006 after careful consideration of the Roman Catholic Church , since he is by the dedicated pity that allows you to it by the Catechism of the Catholic Church meet must ( KKK 2358 ), feels degraded as a pitiable person.
