10 national FIBA teams qualified for the tournament. The United States became the first world champion, Chile won silver and France bronze . Switzerland was the only qualified German-speaking nation to finish ninth in the tournament.
In the preliminary round, each of ten teams plays a game. The winner qualifies for the final round. The losing teams play in the first repetition round, except for the team with the worst point balance, which ends up directly in the second repetition round.
In the first repetition round, four teams each play one game. The winner goes to the second repetition round, the loser goes to the placement round.
In the second round of repetition, three teams play each-against-everyone. The first group qualifies for the final round, the other two teams for the classification round.
In the classification round, four teams play each against each other for places 7 to 10.
In the final round, six teams play each against each other for the world championship and the other places 2 to 6.
