Markian's Column in Istanbul

The Markian column in Istanbul was erected in 455 for the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire Markian (450–457). It stands on an esplanade that the emperor had built.

An emperor statue originally rested on the monolithic column made of Egyptian granite . The rectangular base made of white marble has reliefs on three sides. The column ends with a Corinthian capital .

The inscription on the base reads:

[pr] INCIPIS HANC STATVAM MARCIANI
CERNE TORVMQVE
[praef] ECTVS VOVIT QVOD TATI [anus]
... OPVS
