Mathew Anthony Belcher , AOM (born September 20, 1982 in Gold Coast ) is an Australian sailor .

successes

Mathew Belcher took part in two Olympic Games with the 470 dinghy . In 2012 he started with Malcolm Page , with whom he finished the regatta in first place in front of the British and Argentine boats, making the two Olympic champions . They had won five of the first ten races and came second in the medal race . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he and William Ryan finished second behind the Croatians Šime Fantela and Igor Marenić . The Greeks Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis as well as Belcher and Ryan had achieved 58 total points, but in the medal race they finished ninth ahead of Mantis and Kagialis and thus secured the silver medal. At world championships he won a total of nine medals, eight of which were gold. He was world champion three times, from 2010 to 2012, with Malcolm Page, and between 2013 and 2019 he won the title five times with William Ryan.

In 2013 the World Sailing Association named Belcher World Sailor of the Year . For his Olympic success he received the Australia Order Medal the following year . He is married to the German sailor Friederike Belcher .
