The Kutzerweiher is a body of water in the Luisenpark south of the Neckar in Mannheim .

history

The Kutzerweiher was laid out in the 1920s. It was part of a water system that - fed by the Neckar - extended in the vicinity of Mannheim in the Upper Rhine Plain. The water levels in the pond fluctuated, depending on the level of the Neckar, by up to three meters.

The Luisenpark was part of the exhibition area for the National Garden Show in 1975 , which also included the lake. For this purpose, the water area was roughly doubled to 36,000 square meters or 4 hectares , but the depth of the lake was reduced to 1.40 m to 1.70 m. It was sealed against the Neckar with clay so that the water level no longer fluctuated. This made permanent bank planting possible.

In the west, the lake stretches almost as far as the Untere Luisenpark, and two side arms enclose the leisure meadow in the east. It has a 2,700 m long shoreline. In order to enrich the water with oxygen , the inflow was designed as a mountain stream that flows into the northeast arm of the lake. In the middle, an island was created as a sanctuary for water birds. The 1,500 square meter bird island houses an open-air enclosure with flamingos and cormorants . Ducks and herons live on the lake and carp , roach , tench , pikeperch and pike live in the lake . Three wooden bridges and “jungle bridges” make it possible to cross the lake at narrow points.

For the 1975 Federal Horticultural Show, an electrically operated gondoletta system was installed in the lake , in which boats are pulled over a predetermined course on a circular route with a rope guided under the water's surface. That too was only possible because a constant water level had been ensured.

designation

The name of the lake is reminiscent of the Lord Mayor of Mannheim Theodor Kutzer (1864–1948).
