Sōsuke Takatani ( Japanese 高 谷 惣 亮 Takatani Sōsuke ; born April 5, 1989 in Kyōtango , Kyoto Prefecture ) is a Japanese wrestler . In 2014 he was runner-up in the free style world championship in the weight class up to 74 kg.

Career

Sōsuke Takatani started wrestling in 2002. He concentrates on the free style. The 1.78 meter tall, 80 kg heavy athlete studied at Takushoku University in Hachiōji . Now he is a member of the Sohgo Security Service in Tokyo and a member of the ALSOK Wrestling Club Tokyo . He has been trained by Masanori Ohashi since 2012. His younger brother Daichi Takatani is also a Japanese top wrestler.

In 2005 he was accepted into the Japanese national youth team of freestyle wrestlers. Since that year he has also participated in international junior and senior championships. In 2012 and 2016 he qualified for the Olympic Games in London and Rio de Janeiro, respectively. In London, he was eliminated in the weight class up to 74 kg in the qualification against Aschraf Aliyev from Azerbaijan and took 15th place. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he started in the same weight class and came there to victories over Talgat Ilyasov from Australia and Selimchan Chadijew from France. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Galimchan Usserbajew from Kazakhstan, so he was eliminated and ended up in 6th place.

2013 Sōsuke Takatani was the first time at a World Championship for seniors at the start. In Budapest he won the weight class up to 74 kg over Gia Tschikladse from Ukraine and Akschurek Tanatarow from Kazakhstan and then lost to Aliaschgar Akbarizarinkolaei, Iran and Jakob Makaraschwili, Georgia. He finished 7th.

Sōsuke Takatani celebrated the greatest success in his wrestling career at the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent. He won in Tashkent in the weight class up to 74 kg over Ramasan Kambarow, Turkmenistan, Livan Lopez Ascuy, Cuba, Murad Gaidarow, Belarus and Jumber Kwelaschwili, Georgia and was only defeated in the final against Denis Zargusch from Russia. He became vice world champion.

In the following years he did not get such good results at the world championships. At the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas he won over Francisco Daniel Soler Tanco from Spain and lost to Aniuar Gedujew , Russia (14th), at the 2017 World Cup in Paris he won over Grigor Grigorjan, Armenia and lost to Jordan Burroughs , United States and Ali Schabanow, Belarus (8th place) and at the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, where he competed in the weight class up to 79 kg for the first time, he won over Mihaly Nagy, Hungary and lost to Essadollah Akbarizarinkolaei from Iran (place 11.).

In March 2019 he was part of the Japanese team at the Team World Cup of freestyle wrestlers in Yakutsk, which lost 4-6 in the battle for third place against the United States. He came to victories over Fatih Erdin, Turkey, Yurieski Torreblanca Queralta, Cuba and Samuel Joseph Brooks, USA and only lost to Vladislav Waliev from Russia.

So far, Sōsuke Takatani has won the Japanese championship title seven times.
