The Takushoku University ( jap. 拓殖大学 , Takushoku daigaku , short Takudai ( 拓大 )) is a private university in Japan . The main campus is in Bunkyō-ku , Tokyo .
history
The university was founded in 1900 by Katsura Tarō under the name Taiwan Kyōkai Gakkō ( 台湾 協会 学校 , dt "School of the Taiwan Association"). He founded the school to educate the settlers of Taiwan as Taiwan became a Japanese colony in 1896. In 1901, today's Bunkyō campus was opened. In 1904 the school was renamed the Technical School of the Taiwan Association, and in 1907 then the Technical School of the Tōyō Association ( 東洋 協会 専 門 学校 , Tōyō-kyōkai semmon gakkō ; Tōyō denotes about East Asia). In the same year she founded a branch school in Keijō (today: Seoul ), which in 1922 became the state higher commercial school Keijō. The association also founded several schools in the Japanese colonies, such as the Ryojun Foreign Language School and the Dairen Business School (1910).
The school has been renamed many times. The former names were:
- the colonial school of the Tōyō Association (1915-1918),
- the Takushoku College ( Takushoku daigaku , literally: "College for Reclamation and Settlement"; 1918–1922),
- the Tōyō-Kyōkai University ("University of the Tōyō Association"; 1922–1926; in 1922 it was given university status),
- Takushoku University (1926–1946), and
- the Kōryō University ( 紅 陵 大学 ; Kōryō denotes the "red (autumn-colored) hill" or Bunkyō campus; 1946–1952).
It was renamed Takushoku University again in 1952. The Bunkyō campus was too small, and the university opened the second larger campus in Hachiōji in 1977 .
