Takashi Uchiyama ( Japanese 内 山 ​​高志 , Uchiyama Takashi ; born November 10, 1979 in Kasukabe ) is a Japanese professional boxer and former WBA world champion in super featherweight.

Boxing career

He started boxing at the age of 15 and won 91 of 113 amateur fights. In 2001, 2002 and 2003 he was the Japanese lightweight champion and in April 2002 he also won the bronze medal at the internationally strong King's Cup in Bangkok . In July 2003 he took part in the 12th World Championships in Bangkok, where he won in the preliminary rounds against Tin Wei Hung from Taiwan and Anton Maksimow from Belarus, before losing to Gyula Káté from Hungary in the second round . During his amateur career he also worked as a salaryman .

In 2005 he switched to the professional camp and won seven fights in a row, five of them prematurely. Then he boxed on September 8, 2007 for the OPBF championship (Oriental-Pacific Championship) in super featherweight and won by knockout in the eighth round against Nedal Hussein (balance: 43 wins - 4 defeats).

After five successful title defenses, he received a WBA title chance in super featherweight on January 11, 2010 against Juan Carlos Salgado (21-0) and defeated the Mexican by tKo in the twelfth round. He defended the world championship belt four months later by tKo in the sixth round against the Latin American champion of the WBA Ángel Granados (18-8) from Venezuela.

In September 2010 he defeated Roy Mukhlis (23-2) from Indonesia by tKo in the fifth round and in January 2011 his compatriot Takashi Miura (20-1) by tKo in the eighth round. On December 31, 2011 he met the Mexican Jorge Solís (41-3) in his fourth title defense , whom he defeated in the eleventh round by tKo. After this defeat, Solís announced his retirement from boxing.

His fight against Michael Farenas (34-3) from the Philippines in July 2012 ended in the third round in a technical draw, as Uchiyama sustained an injury from a collision with the heads, which caused the referee to stop the fight. On December 31, 2012, Uchiyama defended his title for the sixth time against Bryan Vázquez (29-0) from Costa Rica by tKo in the eighth round.

After Adrien Broner rose to lightweight at the end of 2012, Takashi Uchiyama was ranked number 1 in the world by Ring Magazine, among others . In May 2013 he won by knockout in the fifth round against Jaider Parra (20-0) and in December on points against Daiki Kaneko (19-2). In December 2014 he defended the title early against Israel Perez (27-2). In May 2015 he beat Jomthong Chuwatana (9-0). In his eleventh title defense, he defeated Oliver Flores (27-1) in December 2015.

On April 27, 2016, he lost his world championship belt to Jezreel Corrales (19-1) after a knockout loss in the second round . In the rematch eight months later, Uchiyama lost just on points.
