Nakayama Masatoshi
Nakayama Masatoshi (Japanese 中山 正 敏, * 1913 ; † 1987 ) was a high-ranking karate master. He last held the 10th Dan degree.
He was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture and entered Takushoku University in 1932 , where he first got to know karate under Funakoshi Gichin and his son Funakoshi Yoshitaka . In order to deepen his karate studies, he later emigrated to China, from where he returned in 1946.
He co-founded the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 1949 . The JKA's first chief technical adviser (Chief Instructor) was initially Funakoshi Gichin, after whose death Nakayama was his successor. Nakayama restructured karate training based on the findings of European sports science . He standardized techniques and forms of exercise and introduced Kata and Kumite as competitive disciplines. Students of the great JKA dōjōs achieved an unprecedented series of successes in Japanese and international competitions in the 1950s and 1960s.
Nakayama wrote several books that made him well known as an author.
