Jion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jion ( jap. 慈恩 ) is the name of a karate kata and means love and kindness . She is included in the same group as Jiin and Jitte .

The kata probably originated in China and was spread from the Tomari region on Okinawa. It is believed that the name of the kata on the temple Ci'en si ( Chinese  慈恩 寺 , Japanese Jion-ji ) or an abbot Kui Ji (632–682; Chinese  窺基 , Pinyin Kuījī , Japanese Ki Ki ) who worked there , whose posthumous name is Jion-daishi (Japanese 慈恩 大師 ), goes back.

This typical Shōtōkan kata has Master Gusukuma (Master Azatos) as the creator. It is one of the higher basic kata of medium difficulty, has to be mastered by the 1st dan and consists of 46 movements. It is also practiced in Wadō-Ryū , Shitō-Ryū and Kobayashi-ryū . Their sequence and rhythm are the same and the techniques are almost identical.

Typical techniques are Yori Ashi and rotation (Manji uke) with subsequent defense in the upper, middle and lower levels.

According to the WKF competition regulations, Jion is one of the two Shitei (compulsory) kata of the Shotokan style alongside Kanku-Dai . It should be carried out in around 60 seconds.
