Mikko Ilonen (born December 18, 1979 in Lahti ) is a Finnish professional golfer on the European Tour .

Life / career

After a successful amateur career - culminating in winning the Amateur Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2000 - he became a professional golfer in 2001 . In his first season, Ilonen stunned the golf world by finishing ninth in the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes . After four years on the European Tour , he lost his eligibility to play and went to the second-ranked Challenge Tour . He was able to recall himself again in July 2006 at the Open Championship when he finished in a remarkable 16th place. In February 2007, Ilonen won his first tournament victory as a professional - at the Indonesia Open , an event on the European Tour and the Asian Tour . In the same year he won the Scandinavian Masters , which Ilonen won again six years later. In June 2014 he won the Irish Open .

Ilonen has been married since 2010 and is based in Lahti .
