Henrik Stenson (born April 5, 1976 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish professional golfer who plays on the European Tour and the North American PGA Tour .

Career

After a successful amateur career - finally playing for his country in the Eisenhower Trophy in Chile in 1998 - Stenson started his career at the end of 1998 and won the Challenge Tour money list in the next 1999/2000 season . As a result, he came to the European Tour in 2001 and has so far won six tournaments there and several top placements at top events. In 2005 Stenson finished eighth on the European Tour Order of Merit (money list), in 2006 he improved to sixth, in 2007 to fourth, and was among the top 20 in the golf world rankings . After winning the Players Championship in May 2009, Stenson achieved what is now his best position in the world rankings with rank 5.

In 2005 he was called up for the first time in the European team at the Seve Trophy and was team best. In 2006 he won the Royal Trophy in Team Europe against the best golfers in Asia and was also part of Europe's winning team in the Ryder Cup . In November 2008 he won the World Cup for Sweden with Robert Karlsson .

After these successes, Henrik Stenson went through a deep sporting crisis, during which he temporarily slipped out of the top 200 in the world rankings. It was not until 2012 that he reported back with his next tournament victory (European Tour - the South African Open ).

A new career highlight came in 2013 when, in addition to some top placements (including second at the British Open ), he won two of the highly endowed playoff tournaments of the FedEx Cup and at the same time secured the overall victory with US $ 10 million in prize money . He then also won the Race to Dubai of the European Tour and was the first golfer in history to win these two most important annual ratings in the same season. In the world rankings, Stenson improved to third place.

The greatest success of his career was when he won The Open Championship in 2016. He is the first male golfer from Sweden to win a major and set a new record for the Open with a total of 264 strokes. In addition, Stenson set the record for individual rounds in majors with his final round of 63 strokes.

At the end of the 2016 season, he again won the Race to Dubai on the European Tour.

The game

Stenson is left-handed but plays golf right-handed.

What is striking about his game is the fact that he rarely uses his driver; He performs most long cuts (without using a tee) with a blade 3, with which he agrees on acceptable distances with high accuracy. In the 2013 season he led the PGA Tour in the statistics of hit fairways with 72.65%, while with an average teeing distance of 290.9 yards (266 meters) he was still 66th (out of 180). This style of play also helped him to rank 1 in the "Greens in Regulation" statistics (71.96%).

Two peculiarities of Stenson's swing are a slightly jerky shift of weight onto the right leg before the start of the backswing and a shortened forward swing in which the golf club usually stays in front of Stenson's chest and does not swing behind the neck or head as with the majority of modern professional golfers.
