Sam Snead

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel Jackson "Sam" Snead (born May 27, 1912 in Ashwood, Virginia , † May 23, 2002 in Hot Springs, Virginia) was one of the all-time greats in US golf and a seven-time major winner. In the course of his career he won the record number of 82 tournaments on the North American PGA TOUR and around 70 more worldwide.

Origin and early days as a professional

Sam Snead was born on May 27, 1912, the youngest of six children. He grew up in simple circumstances. His father worked as a "porter, electrician and what do I know in a hotel in our city". He came to golf in the same way as many world-class players before and after him. At the age of seven, he began working as a caddy on the golf course at The Homestead resort. His own game began with his brother Homer, twelve years his senior, in his parents' garden. They played their own four-hole course with cans of tomatoes for holes and sticks for clubs.

In 1934, when Snead was 22 years old, he started working as a professional in Homestead's Pro Shop. He began cleaning and repairing members' clubs. Only after a while was he allowed to give lessons.

Career as a professional

Snead has won the Masters three times, the PGA Championship three times and the Open Championship once . He was denied a US Open title - the only flaw in his impressive track record.

Snead was on the US team of the Ryder Cup in 1937, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955 and 1959. He was captain in 1959 ( playing captain ) and 1969 ( non-playing captain ).

The successes that he was able to achieve as an advanced senior are astonishing. At the age of 62, Snead finished third in the PGA Championship, just three strokes behind, and at 72, he finished a round of 60 on The Homestead's course.

Snead was known for his rural demeanor and demeanor, always with a straw hat, he sometimes played tournaments barefoot and tapped sayings like: Keep your pennies together, stay away from the whiskey, and never give a putt . His nickname was "Slammin 'Sammy".

From 1984 until just before his death in 2002, Sam Snead made the honor tee at the Masters at the Augusta National Golf Club . He was accompanied by his famous colleagues Byron Nelson (until 2001) and Gene Sarazen (until 1999).
