Gregory John "Greg" Norman AO (born February 10, 1955 in Mount Isa , Queensland ) is an Australian professional golfer who led the golf world rankings for 331 weeks in the 1980s and 1990s . Because of his white-blonde hair, he is called The Great White Shark , 'the great white shark ', (or in short: The Shark , 'the shark').

Tournament career

Greg Norman won the Open Championship twice, in 1986 and 1993, but failed in the other majors . Often very close and sometimes unhappy, such as at the 1986 PGA Championship , when his opponent Bob Tway snatched his victory away with a punched bunker punch, or the following year at the Masters when Larry Mize chipped in in the jump-off with a miraculous stroke from 40 meters. On the other hand, Norman has missed some chances to win in majors through poor final rounds, such as a 78 at the Masters 1996 or a 75 at the US Open 1995. The year 1986 was significant - when he was leading all four majors before the final round and "only" won those Open Championship. Despite all these low blows, it should not be overlooked that Norman has a total of 30 top ten placements in the majors . The list of his numerous worldwide tournament victories can be found below (see also points 5 to 8 of the table of contents).

Greg Norman was born to Merv and Toini Norman. His mother was the daughter of a Finnish carpenter , his father an electrical engineer . As a teenager, Norman played rugby , cricket and set out to become a professional surfer.

Norman was married to Laura, an American, from 1981 to September 2007 and has two children with her. On June 28, 2008, he married ex-tennis player Chris Evert in a private ceremony on Paradise Island in the Bahamas . In early October 2009, however, the couple announced their separation.

He has now become a very successful businessman in the golf sector, so that he only intervenes occasionally in the tournament. His personal wealth is estimated at several hundred million US dollars.
