Ben Clifford Curtis (born May 26, 1977 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American professional golfer of the PGA TOUR , who belongs to the circle of major winners.

Curtis was already very successful as an amateur, winning the Ohio Amateur Championship for two consecutive years (1999 and 2000), something only two golfers have achieved before him - John Cook and the legendary Arnold Palmer . In 2000 he also won the Player's Amateur Championship .

His greatest success to date is the completely surprising win of the Open Championship in 2003. The 13th place at the Western Open , which brought Curtis the qualification for the major tournament, was the best placement of his professional career two weeks earlier. Curtis achieved his first victory as a professional in his first major start, which was last achieved by Francis Ouimet in 1913. However, he profited greatly from the mishap of the Dane Thomas Bjørn , who was three strokes ahead just before the end but buried his chances in a sand bunker.

However, Ben Curtis could not use the tailwind of this great victory, and played in the following seasons again as inconspicuously as before. In June 2006 he won his second tournament and won the Booz Allen Classic , an event of the PGA TOUR , by a large margin . Another victory at the 84 LUMBER Classic followed in September .

In 2008 he played for the first time in the victorious USA team in the Ryder Cup .

He currently resides in Stow , Ohio with his wife, Candace .
