Sir Bob Charles ONZ KNZM CBE (born March 14, 1936 in Carterton , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand golf professional .

Private

Bob's parents, Ivor and Phyllis Charles, were avid and talented golfers. He married Verity in 1963 and has a daughter and a son. In the meantime he also has four grandchildren. Today Bob lives alternately in Florida , USA and in Canterbury , New Zealand .

Career

In 1954 at the age of 18 he won the New Zealand Open. His biggest highlight was winning the British Open in 1963, at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Course in Lancashire. He is the only New Zealander to ever win the British Open. Until Phil Mickelson's victory in 2013, he was also the only left-handed golfer in the world to ever win the Open. Bob is also the first New Zealander to win a major tournament . After him, only Michael Campbell succeeded . Today he still plays in senior PGA tournaments .
