Carterton is a small town in the Carterton District in the south of the North Island of New Zealand . The city is the administrative seat of the district.

geography

The city is located between the towns of Masterton , about 14 km northeast and Greytown , about 8 km southwest of Carterton . To the west of the village lie the Tararua Range and to the southeast the Ruamahanga River , in whose plain Carterton is located.

history

Carterton was originally founded in 1857 under the name " Three Mile Bush " as a base camp for the workers who built the road between Masterton and Greytown . The settlers who settled in the place asked to rename the place, most recently the region in Cartervale and the place in Carterville , in honor of Charles Rooking Carter , who had made a contribution to the settlement project in the area. On July 26, 1859, the Provincial Council in Wellington decided to rename the place, but from " Three Mile Bush " in Carterton .

In the 2013 census, Carterton had 4686 inhabitants, 13.7% more than in the 2006 census.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 2 passes through Carterton and divides the town in half. It connects Carterton with the metropolitan area around Wellington in the southwest and with the east coast around Hastings and Napier .

Rail transport

The railway connection of the Wairarapa Line , which also runs through the town, connects Carterton with the economic centers in the southwest and northeast as well as via State Highway 1 .

Attractions

Carterton is known for its artists and their arts and crafts.

Events

The area around Charterton is very popular with balloonists. In early 2012, when a hot air balloon crashed from a height of 150 meters, eleven people were killed in good weather .

City personalities

  • In 1936, the professional golfer Bob Charles was born in Carterton . He won the Open Championship in 1962 , making him the first left-hander to take first place in this competition.
