Nagata-ku ( Japanese 長 田 区 ) is a municipality ( ku ) of Kobe . With 11.46 km² and a little more than 100,000 inhabitants, both in terms of area and population, it is the smallest of the nine districts, but has the highest population density with almost 9,000 inhabitants per km².

geography

Nagata-ku, which is mostly densely built up, has neither a large proportion of the Rokkō ridge behind the city center nor any appreciable green spaces in the south of the city .

Nagata mainly consists of residential areas of lower income groups. Many small and medium-sized farms are scattered in the area. In addition to other productions, there are many shoe manufacturers in Nagata. The sea side of Nagata is exclusively industrial (including gas tanks from Osaka Gas) and port area. Even after the catastrophic destruction caused by the Kobe earthquake in 1995 , Nagata's shoe production is leading in Japan.

history

The “Nagata disaster” in 1995 did not happen directly as a result of the quake, but indirectly: Fires that had once started spread particularly quickly in Nagata because of the densely built-up urban area with older and less fire-proof houses. The carelessness of the responsible authorities, who failed to refill the city's cisterns after a summer drought in 1994, had catastrophic consequences, so that the fire fighters who finally arrived, without being able to rely on functioning water pipes, could only spray water they had brought with them for a few minutes and then burn it down had to watch whole districts.

The population decline, also due to a lack of living space, could only be partially halted with reconstruction measures, as they made slow progress according to Kobe's cash situation (example southern Shinnagata, see also Kobe airport ).

traffic

Nagata is by the railway lines JR West JR Kobe Line as a section of the San'yō Main Line , Kōbe Kōsoku Tetsudō Tōzai Line , San'yō Denki Tetsudō Main Line , Shintetsu Arima Line , the Seishin-Yamate Line and Kaigan Line U-Bahn Kobe and the Hanshin Autobahn No. 31 are well developed.
