William Charles Rogers (known as Bill Rogers ) (born September 10, 1951) is an American professional golfer , best known as the winner of The Open Championship .

Life

He was born in Waco , Texas born and spent the son of a Lieutenant Colonel ( Lt. Col. ) of the United States Air Force his childhood in Morocco and Germany. He later attended the University in Houston , where he met with the later Golf Professional and PGA Tour participants Bruce Lietzke a room shared.

Athletic career

As an amateur, Bill Rogers took part in the WalkerCup for the USA in 1973 . From 1975 to 1988 he played on the PGA Tour and won six tournaments, four of them in 1981 alone. Untypical for an American golfer, he achieved his most notable successes in Great Britain : the Suntory World Match Play Championship in Wentworth in 1979 and two years later the British Open at Royal St George's Golf Club , where he defeated Bernhard Langer with four strokes.

Bill Rogers was Player of the Year in 1981 and runner-up in McCormack's World Golf Ranking . That year he also took part in the Ryder Cup .

In 1982 Bill Rogers won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and led the US Open before dropping back to tied 3rd place on the final day. After another victory on the PGA Tour in 1983, his success on the Tour waned and he left the Tour in 1988. He accepted a post as Golf Director at the San Antonio Country Club and held it for the next eleven years.

Since he has in 2001 reached the age of 50, he plays now and then on the Champions Tour for seniors, where he as the biggest success in 2002 with Bruce Lietzke the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament victory won.
