The Rio Parnaíba is a river in northeastern Brazil , which almost in its entire course forms the border between the states of Maranhão and Piauí . It rises at an altitude of 700 meters in the Brazilian mountains in the Chapada das Mangabeiras mountain range , which has been in the Nascentes do Rio Parnaíba National Park since 2002 , and flows 1716 km northeast into the Atlantic Ocean . There are waterfalls in the middle and upper part of the river, but it is navigable up to the mouth of the Rio Canindé . The river delta , Delta do Parnaíba, is located in Piauí and is said to be the third largest river delta in the world. There is the city of Parnaíba with a port.
The slope of the river from the source to the small town of Santa Filomena (270 m) is of medium size, after which it is between 35 cm / km and 17 cm / km.
At Guadalupe , the Parnaíba is dammed up to form the Boa Esperança reservoir .
The catchment area is 322,823 km².
There are many piranhas in the river .
