Steve Elkington (born December 8, 1962 in Inverell , Australia ) is an Australian professional golfer of the Champions Tour and belongs to the circle of major winners.

Elkington won his only major in the 1995 PGA Championship at the Riviera Country Club when he pocketed an eight - yard putt to win a birdie in the jump-off against Colin Montgomerie . He won a total of ten tournaments on the PGA TOUR , including twice the highest endowed Players Championship in 1991 and 1997.

Elkington suffers from various allergies and has had several sinus surgeries. These problems influence the orderly progress of his professional career.

Nevertheless, with a second place at the PGA Championship 2005, behind the winner Phil Mickelson , he was able to advance back into the top 50 of the golf world rankings, which entitle him to participate in the most highly endowed tournaments. In the 2006 season Elkington could no longer hold this position and in 2007 he slipped out of the Top 100. Since 2013 he has been eligible to play on the Champions Tour .

Elkington played on the International Team for the Presidents Cup in 1994-2000.

He is married to his wife Lisa and has a daughter and a son. He alternates between Houston , Texas and Sydney , Australia .
