Tania Di Mario (born May 4, 1979 in Rome ) is an Italian water polo player , captain of the national team and gold medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, world champion in 2001 in Fukuoka and three-time European champion in 1999, 2003 and 2012.

Sports life

Di Mario switched from swimming to water polo at the age of fifteen and has been playing for the Associazione Sportiva Orizzonte in Catania , the second largest city in Sicily , since 1993 .

She got her first gold medal in an international competition at the European Water Polo Championships in 1999 in Prato, Tuscany . Italy defeated the Netherlands 10-9 in the final.

The high point of her sporting life could have been winning the gold medal at the 2004 water polo tournament in Beijing . Again Italy won 10: 9, this time after extra time and against Greece.

The Italians won the youngest gold international with Di Mario at the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven : This time they defeated Greece 13:10 in the final.

At the 2015 World Swimming Championships, team captain Di Mario and her colleagues fought 7: 7 against Australia in the small final and Italy then won the five-meter shootout 5: 3.

Awards

Di Mario received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2003 as a cavalier / knight, in 2004 in the form of Commendatore / Komtur. The Italian Olympic Committee immortalized them in its hall of fame with the Collare d'oro al merito sportivo .
