La Biosthetique Sam FBW , Sam for short (born March 10, 2000 ) is a formerly internationally successful eventing horse from the Württemberg breed.

He was ridden in sport by the German world class rider Michael Jung and is owned by his family, the German Olympic Committee for Equestrian and Erich Single.

Sports

Sam, ridden by Michael Jung, had his first appearance in front of a larger audience at the Bundeschampionat in 2005 and 2006. Still with weaknesses in dressage, he finished fifth in the five-year-old eventing horses and sixth a year later. In 2006 and 2007 the couple won the silver medal at the World Championships for young eventing horses.

In 2009 the first outstanding successes came with the victory in the CCI 4 * Luhmühlen and the World Cup final in Strzegom . At the European Championships in the same year, Sam and Jung won the bronze medal.

At the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, USA, Sam won individual gold under Michael Jung. In the following year, the couple won both individually and with the team at the European Championships in Luhmühlen. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , the gelding was double Olympic champion under Michael Jung.

In the middle of the decade, victories were achieved in the two most important tests in the stronghold of eventing, Great Britain: The Burghley Horse Trials in September 2015 and the Badminton Horse Trials in May 2016. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Sam won gold under Jung in the individual ranking and silver with the team. The horse Takinou intended for the games was canceled due to a febrile infection.

The 2016 Olympic Games were chosen as the last international championship for Sam. As a result, the gelding was only used in doses at individual tournaments. The year 2018 was planned as the last year in tournament sport for Sam. He went badminton one last time. The last planned starts in Aachen and Burghley did not take place due to an injury. Although fit again at the end of the season, rider and owner decided against a trainer for the last top test of the year (the Étoiles de Pau ). With that, Sam ended his career.

From March 2006 to May 2018, Sam took part in a total of 63 international eventing tests. From June 2006 to March 2015 he finished all exams and always came in one of the first five places. Until March 2018 he did not finish individual tests (especially smaller tests at the beginning of the season where his rider did not finish the cross-country ride), but still came in sixth or better in all other tests.

Ownership

Until 2011, 60% of the shares belonged to the horse Sabine Kreuter from Stöttwang . In 2010 she wanted to sell the horse, which led to a dispute with Michael Jung. In the meantime, according to the Jung family, Sam was "kidnapped" by the main owner. In order to continue to secure the eventing horse for German equestrian sport, the German Olympic Committee for Equestrian (DOKR) made an offer with the help of several sponsors. Finally, an agreement was reached at the end of January 2011, according to which DOKR acquired 43% (around 365,000 euros) and patron Erich Single 13% (around 100,000 euros), subject to a health check six months later due to a heart murmur detected by Sam.
