Tournament and history
The FEI World Equestrian Federation counts the competition as one of the six most important tournaments worldwide, in the CCI 5 * -L category (until 2018: CCI 4 *). The other tournaments in this category are the Badminton Horse Trials , the Burghley Horse Trials , the Kentucky Three-Day Event , the Australian International Three Day Event and the Luhmühlen Eventing . from 2008 to 2016 the CCI von Pau was part of the FEI Classics tournament series .
The tournament was held for the first time in 1991, initially as a CCI 1 *. In the following year the announcement was changed, in the following years the tournament was advertised as CCI 2 *. In 2001 the European championship for eventing riders was held in Pau .
After the tournament was advertised as CCI 3 * in 2002, it hosted the finals of the Versatility World Cup in 2003 and 2004 . From 2003 onwards, in addition to the main competition, a small event at the CIC 2 * level will also take place at the same time. After the main test of the tournament was held in 2005 as a World Cup test (CIC 3 * -W), it was carried out again in 2006 as a CCI 3 * (as a test tournament for the future CCI 4 * competition). In 2007 the main test was included in the group of CCI 4 * tournaments. With the change in the designation system for international versatility at the beginning of 2019, the previous CCI 4 * will now be called CCI 5 * -L.
