Ingrid Klimke (born April 1, 1968 in Münster ) is a German dressage and eventing rider . She bears the title of riding master .

Private

Ingrid Klimke is the daughter of Reiner Klimke . She has two brothers, one of whom is the dressage rider Michael Klimke . Ingrid Klimke is married to Andreas Busacker and has two daughters. Her older daughter Greta Busacker also competes in versatility tests and is part of the German junior team 1 U18 eventing.

youth

Klimke had contact with horses from an early age through her father and learned to ride at an early age. She claims that she has never been pushed into a career in equestrian sport. Since her youth she has been riding dressage, jumping and eventing competitions. In addition to her father, Fritz Ligges was her trainer, and she was given the opportunity to stay abroad as a “working student” with Ian Millar .

“I have received consistent training from all of them, which is geared towards developing an intense relationship of trust between horse and rider and never overburdening the horses. As a working student at Ian Millar, I learned everything to do with grooming and course riding and I am very grateful to my father that he made this stay abroad possible. "

- Ingrid Klimke about her teachers

After finishing school, she did an apprenticeship as a banker. Subsequently, she began a teacher training course. During the legal clerkship phase, however, she found that this was not compatible with equestrian sport - the tournaments usually start during the week. Then she finally decided to make equestrian sports and horse training her profession.

Sports career

She contested her first international championship in the age group of "riders" in 1991 when she won the bronze medal in individual and team competitions with Pinot at the European championships for rural riders (eventing) in 1991. This was followed by successes at the German championships in both eventing and dressage. Since 2000, she has played all the Summer Olympics so far.

With the horses Sleep Late , Robinson's Concord , Windfall and FRH Butts Abraxxas in particular , Ingrid Klimke was able to achieve numerous successes in national and international versatility tests.

She had a low point in her career in 1999. After her father's death, she tried to distract herself by preparing for the European Championships and also took part in the European Championships. There were two refusals in the cross-country course. Even before the European Championships, she had contracted tendinitis in her ankle. This was operated on after the championship, but complications subsequently arose, so that Klimke had to stay in hospital for three months.

“Today I know that this was a mistake. I was unable to support Sleep Late at all and left him alone in the field. I would never do that again. I was neither mentally nor physically prepared for such a difficult test and so the bad placement was only logical. "

- Ingrid Klimke about her ride at the European Championships in 1999

In 2005 Ingrid Klimke achieved her greatest international individual success to date at a championship: At the European Championships in Blenheim , she won individual bronze with Sleep Late .

On August 12, 2008, Klimke became Olympic champion with the team in eventing at the Olympic equestrian competitions in Hong Kong together with Hinrich Romeike , Andreas Dibowski , Peter Thomsen and Frank Ostholt . Two years earlier she was part of the gold team at the 2006 World Equestrian Games .

After the Olympic Games in 2008, the sale of her successful horse Butts Abraxxas was threatened . The main owner (Klimke himself held a 20 percent stake) wanted to sell the horse and forbade Klimke to continue using Abraxxas . The former show jumping and dressage rider Madeleine Winter-Schulze came to her aid - she acquired the remaining shares and continued to provide Klimke Butts Abraxxas .

At the 2011 European Championships in Luhmühlen , she won another team gold medal with FRH Butts Abraxxas . She herself was also on the individual medal course, but Abraxxas again showed problems in the jumping course. She came in eleventh in the final standings and commented on this with the words "Six down - he has never jumped so badly".

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Klimke won the team gold medal in eventing with Butts Abraxxas . Also in 2013 at the European Championships and in 2014 at the World Equestrian Games on FRH Escada and at the European Championships in 2015 on Horseware Hale Bob , she won the team title with the German team.

In 2014/15 she was the first German to win the overall ranking of the FEI Classics . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she and Hale Bob OLD were part of the German eventing team, which won the silver medal. On August 20, 2017, she won her first major international individual title at the European Eventing Championships in Strzegom .

Although the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon in America were less successful for the majority of the German eventing team, Klimke and Hale Bob OLD were able to maintain themselves at the top with only 23.30 minus points until the final day. Only one drop in the jumping test led to a relapse to 3rd place.

Since December 2019 Ingrid Klimke has been in the Olympic team of eventing with SAP Asha P and SAP Hale Bob OLD as well as with Franziskus in the Olympic team of dressage. This means that for the first time she is a member of the championship squad in both disciplines. In April 2020, Klimke was also ranked 32nd on the world rankings of eventing riders and 32nd among dressage riders with her squad horse Franziskus .

Instructor

In addition to the "big sport", she devotes herself to training young horses with whom she successfully takes part in the Bundeschampionat and the Nuremberg Castle Cup. One example of this is Damon Hill NRW , who was later ridden with great success by her former student Helen Langehanenberg .

In addition, she was a base trainer for the Westphalian young dressage riders for several years and worked as a trainer for master courses at the Westphalian riding and driving school. She is a board member of the German Rider and Driver Association and the Westphalian Horse Museum. Ingrid Klimke gives numerous courses at home and abroad and is a speaker at seminars.

She attaches great importance to training her horses according to the classic riding theory and to building a good relationship of trust with them. She is a member of the Xenophon e. V. - Society for the preservation and promotion of classic riding culture .

Awards

Klimke was named Sportswoman of the Year by the City of Münster's Sports Association at the Ball des Sports in 1999 and subsequently from 2004 to 2008.

Klimke, who is now equestrian master craftsman , was the second woman ever to be awarded the title of riding master at the major horse show in her hometown of Münster in early 2012 . This is awarded for outstanding results over many years as a trainer of top riders and horses as well as commitment to equestrian sport that is worth emulating.

In November 2012, she and 163 other athletes were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf .

In 2016 she received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .
