Ian Millar , CM (born January 6, 1947 in Halifax , Nova Scotia ) is a retired Canadian show jumper, world champion and Olympic silver medalist.
Because of his long sports career and his achievements, he was nicknamed "Captain Canada". He has held the record for the most Olympic Games since the 2012 Olympic Games with ten participations.
Career
Millar grew up in Ottawa as the son of a military man. He became interested in horses early on. When he was ten years old, his father was relocated to Alberta . The family spent one summer at Gull Lake near Lacombe . There Ian Millar hired a horse from a rancher who rented horses here to ride. Over the summer he helped the rancher with his business and in return could ride as much as he wanted. In the fall of that year he began taking riding lessons in Edmonton .
Millar had his first start in a Nations Cup in show jumping in 1971. From 1972 on, with two exceptions (World Equestrian Games 2002, Olympic Games 2016), he was a member of every Canadian show jumping team at the Olympic Games, World Championships and Pan-American Games. Between 1983 and 2014 Ian Millar was Canadian Show Jumping Champion eleven times, from 1986 to 1991 he won the title consistently.
Millar celebrated his greatest successes with the gelding Big Ben : victories in more than 40 grand prizes worldwide, including two wins at the Spruce Meadows Masters and six derby victories in Spruce Meadows . During that time he won the World Cup finals in 1988 and 1989, took part in three Olympic Games and won the individual gold medal at the 1987 Pan American Games.
After Ian Millar in 1980 in the boycotting countries aligned Olympic spare competitions won team gold, it took until 2008 until it was first presented to a proper Olympic medal: In the 2008 Olympics he won a team with Jill Henselwood , Eric Lamaze and Mac Cone the silver medal. The same happened at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, where Ian Millar Dixson rode.
For the third time, Millar won the Grand Prix of the Spruce Meadows Masters 2014, now worth 1.5 million Canadian dollars, and rode Dixson here . Dixson had to undergo surgery in the run-up to the 2016 Olympic Games . He and his second horse Teddy du Bosquetiau were on the long list of Canadians, but unlike his daughter Amy, he was not nominated.
He became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1986 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Canadian Sports in 1996 .
Millar ended his active career on May 1, 2019.
Private
In March 2008, his wife, Lynn, died of cancer. Millar's children Jonathon and Amy are also international show jumpers for Canada. Together they run a farm in Perth in the Canadian province of Ontario .
