The 2017 European Eventing Championships were held from August 17th to 20th, 2017 in the Lower Silesian town of Strzegom . The event was the 33rd European Eventing Championships .

organization

preparation

In June 2014 the World Equestrian Federation ( FEI) awarded the European Eventing Championships for 2017 to Strzegom, which was given preference over its competitor Fontainebleau. It is the first time that Poland has hosted a European Championship in eventing.

Versatility tests have been held in Strzegom since 2000, and international tests since 2003. The eventing World Cup final was held here in 2009, and the European Young Rider Championships also took place here in 2015. The equestrian facility is the venue for several eventing tournaments every year, and the Polish stage of the FEI Nations Cup series has been held since 2012 .

Implementation, venue, media

The FEI's general sponsor, Longines , was also the official partner and timekeeper in Strzegom ("Official Partner, Timekeeper and Watch")

The places for dressage and jumping as well as the cross-country course were located in Ośrodek Jeździecki Stragona (Equestrian Center Stragona), which is located in the vicinity of Muhrau Castle (Pałac Morawa) about three kilometers east of the city center. The off-road course was designed by the former German championship rider Rüdiger Schwarz . B. was used at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen.

The pan-European TV broadcaster Eurosport 1 broadcast a one-hour summary of the event on Saturday after the European Championships. The FEI broadcast the entire tournament for a fee on its website. Shortly before the start of the tournament, the German IPTV broadcaster ClipMyHorse acquired broadcasting rights to the European Championships and subsequently showed the partial tests live in Germany.

Time schedule

The European Championships started on the afternoon of August 16, 2017 (Wednesday) with the first veterinary examination that all participating horses had to undergo. The sporting program began the following day: On Thursday and Friday, the dressage sessions took place from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.

The second partial test, the cross-country course, had to be mastered for the riders and horses on August 19th (Saturday). On the last day of the tournament, the second veterinary examination and the jumping competition as the third partial test were on the program. The event ended with the medal handover and a closing ceremony.

Results

Intermediate result after the dressage

On the first day, the German team was clearly in the lead after two riders. Julia Krajewski with Samourai du Thot got a good dressage result with 75.77 percent, but the result of Bettina Hoy and Seigneur Medicott with 83.59 percent was outstanding. On the second day Ingrid Klimke and Michael Jung came with their horses in second and third place in the individual ranking. With this, Germany was in the lead with only 87.70 minus points before the off-road day and thus set a new record for team dressage results in eventing.

The best rider from another nation in the individual ranking was Gemma Tattersall, who competed as an individual rider for Great Britain. In second place in the team ranking was Olympic champion France, more than 24 minus points behind. The team riders of Great Britain followed only 0.1 minus points behind.

Intermediate result according to the terrain

The off-road course was rated as technically demanding before the off-road day, Michael Jung classified it as rather difficult for a three-star course. The time allowed was also considered difficult to achieve.

It had rained that night, which made the ground slippery. As a result, at the beginning of the test, almost all riders ran past and / or two-digit negative scores for exceeding the ideal time. Riders starting later could react to this and use longer studs under the horse's hooves. The eighth starter, Pietro Roman, with Barraduff was the first to stay without mistakes and thus to keep his dressage result. He was to remain the only one who succeeded in doing this for the next 40 rides.

Eight of the 77 starters support the terrain, of which a fall had more serious consequences: the Polish single rider Michał Knap and his horse Bob the Builder supported on obstacle 16. The 11-year-old gelding suffered a complicated fracture on his right foreleg as a result was put to sleep. For Bettina Hoy, leading in front of the site, after just over a minute of her ride, the chance to become individual European champion again after 20 years was over. Already at this early point in time, the course designer had set up three obstacles (4A to 4C) standing on an inclined line as obstacle number 4. At obstacle 4C, a number of starter pairs had a runaway, including Hoy with Seigneur Medicott . The gelding, who is considered cautious, had already lost a horseshoe and was unsettled. Later in the course he lost another iron, at obstacle 10 Bettina Hoy fell.

It was Kristina Cook, who placed third at the European Championships in 1997, who managed the second faultless ride in ideal time. Ingrid Klimke and Hale Bob OLD succeeded in the same way, keeping the medal chances for the German team after Bettina Hoy was eliminated and Julia Krajewski had 23.6 additional points. The French, however, had no more chances, as two of their four team pairs were eliminated. Michael Jung crossed the finish line in the fastest time with Rocana without any blame , so that he was now in second place behind Klimke in the individual ranking. In the team standings, despite the poor start of their first rider Oliver Townend, the British were almost able to maintain their dressage result, without failures they were now in the lead with almost ten minus points. Germany and Sweden followed behind, the other teams lagged behind.

In the aftermath of the off-road day, it was found that the Danish team rider Peter Flarup's departure was a wrong decision. Flarup was stopped because three obstacle judges had confirmed that he had refused her obstacle. However, one of these reports was in error. However, since the regulations do not provide for a possibility of correction, the result remained unchanged.

Bottom line

The second "Horse Inspection" (veterinary medical examination) before jumping brought about changes in the rankings: Four riders withdrew their horses before the examination, including Oliver Townend. Great Britain no longer had a cancellation result. The Dutch single starter Merel Blom also withdrew her horse after it failed the examination at the first attempt. The horses of the team riders Paweł Spisak (Poland) and Joris Vanspringel (Belgium) did not pass the test, so that their teams also had to do without a fourth rider in jumping.

The starting field in jumping was divided into two groups. The starting order was based on the individual evaluation, the best results at the end. The first group showed that the show jumping course was particularly demanding for the weaker couples: of the 31 riders, only four with their horses made no mistakes. There were few negative points for exceeding the time, but some rides with double-digit negative points for obstacle drops. The worst was the jumping for the Polish team rider Mateusz Kiempa, who collected 36 minus points.

The second group of the best 25 pairs not only brought the decision in the individual ranking, all team riders of the three leading nations were also part of this group. Julia Krajewski presented here with a zero round with Samourai du Thot for Germany. Things went just as well for the German individual riders: Josefa Sommer and Hamilton only got one minus point for slightly exceeding the time and came in twelfth place. Kai Rüder finished the European Championships with Colani Sunrise in sixth place.

The jumping was unhappy for the Swedes: Although they were able to keep their bronze rank, in some cases they slipped significantly behind in the individual ranking. Sara Algotsson-Ostholt lost her third place with 12 minus points and was ninth in the final result. In the case of the British, only the individual riders Piggy French and Gemma Tattersall got obstacle errors, the team riders remained without blame and secured the team gold medal.

Even after the mistakes of third from last starter Sara Algotsson-Ostholt, Michael Jung had less than one obstacle mistake ahead. He kept his dressage result with Rocana without any mistakes and thus also held the chance of his fourth individual European championship gold in a row. Ingrid Klimke was the last to start. The starting position was similar for her and Hale Bob : She could have allowed herself two minus points for exceeding the time limit, but not a mistake on the course. But as in the last two European championships, all the bars stayed up. After many team gold medals and an individual silver medal at the 2013 European Championships, Klimke achieved the first individual victory in an international championship.

Switzerland competed in Strzegom with a team and two individual riders. The best individual result was achieved by Ben Vogg (23rd place), the team came in eighth after Felix Vogg left the field. Austria sent two riders to the European Championships, here Katrin Khoddam Hazrati and Cosma brought the best result (25th place).

When evaluating the blood and urine samples, Samourai du Thot , the horse of German team rider Julia Krajewski, tested positive for firocoxib. This was an illegal medication. Since no explanation could be found for how the agent could have got into the horse, Krajewski waived an appeal to the FEI Tribunal and accepted the administrative penalty imposed by the FEI in the form of a fine. Krajewski was subsequently disqualified and the German team dropped from silver to tenth place. At the beginning of December 2017, the new award of the silver and bronze medals was officially confirmed.
