European championships for eventing riders in Luhmühlen

The European Eventing Championships 2011 took place from August 25 to August 28, 2011 in the Salzhausen district of Luhmühlen .

It was the 30th European Eventing Championship .

organization

preparation

At the FEI General Assembly in Buenos Aires in 2008 it was decided to award the 2011 European Eventing Championships to Germany. Luhmühlen, already the venue for the European championships in 1975, 1979, 1987 and 1999, had applied to be the venue.

Implementation, venue, media

The European Championships opened in the late afternoon of August 24, 2011 (Wednesday). The motto of the opening ceremony was “Rides of the Century”. The first constitutional examination for the participating horses took place on this day.

The event ended on Sunday, August 28, 2011, after 3 p.m. with the award ceremony and medals.

The Luhmühlen eventing facility, on which the 2011 European Championships are held, was extensively rebuilt in 2010 and 2011 and reopened for international four-star eventing in June 2011.

The last two days of the tournament were broadcast on German-language television. On Saturday, ZDF showed a half-hour summary of the day of the tournament, while ARD broadcast the final of the jumping competition on Sunday for around an hour. Eurosport showed the tournament in a one-hour summary on September 14th. In addition, the FEI broadcast the tournament on Saturday and Sunday for a fee.

The main sponsor of the European Championships was HSBC . Federal Minister Ursula von der Leyen was the patron of the event .

Competitions

General

Unchanged since the first European Championships (with the exception of the 1997 European Championships), the European Versatility Championships have two ratings - for team and individual ratings - which are awarded after the partial exams have been completed.

Since 2005, the European Championship has been held as a long test in a new format - dressage, cross-country, jumping - at CCI 3 * level.

Eleven teams and other individual riders competed, the field of participants thus comprised 70 riders. The participating nations were each allowed to send four team riders and two individual riders, each with one horse, to the European championships. As the host nation, Germany was allowed to start eight individual riders alongside the team riders.

Time schedule

The start of the sporting program was the dressage test, which was held on Thursday and Friday. Before the regular participants, Anna Siemer (born Junkmann) started with Charlott as a test rider outside of the valuation (“Guinea Pig”).

The second partial test is the cross-country course, the core of the versatility. This was carried out on Saturday. The next day the jumping competition was the last part of the competition. The exams lasted from morning to afternoon.

Results

Most successful couple in the dressage test: Ingrid Klimke and FRH Butts Abraxxas

Intermediate result after the dressage

In the dress judgment test, Germany took the lead in the team ranking. With consistently strong individual performances, the team achieved a dressage result of 98.70 minus points and thus probably the best dressage team result in the history of eventing.

Ingrid Klimke made an important contribution to this result with FRH Butts Abraxxas . With a result of 80.00% (equivalent to 30.00 minus points) Klimke achieved the best eventing dressage of her career so far and thus took the lead in the individual ranking after dressage.

Intermediate result according to the terrain

The off-road day of the European Championships turned out to be rainy, which also affects the ground conditions. Nevertheless, the course built by Mark Phillips turned out to be a demanding but manageable task: two riders gave up in the field, eleven riders dropped out in the field. The Belgian team is no longer a complete team with only two riders.

Two years earlier (at the European Championships in Fontainebleau) six riders had given up in the area, 14 riders dropped out on the day of the terrain, half of the participating eight teams consisted of fewer than three riders according to the terrain.

After the off-road day of the European Eventing Championships in 2011, Germany is - despite the fall of team rider Andreas Dibowski - in the lead almost unchanged in terms of points. In the individual ranking there were no changes in the placement of the two best dressage riders.

Bottom line

After the end of the field test, the second constitutional test was carried out on Sunday morning. The horses of a Spanish and a Polish team event were excluded from further competition as "not fit to compete". The Polish team now consisted of less than three riders.

The jumping competition on the final day again led to significant changes in the rankings, but the German dominance continued. The first two team riders, Sandra Auffarth and Michael Jung, each achieved a faultless lap with their horses. Ingrid Klimke, who had been the leader until then, was the last rider to enter the show jumping course. Already knowing that the jumping competition is the weak point in Abraxxas' tournament appearances , there were six obstacle drops. Klimke commented on this, slipping to eleventh place in the final ranking, with the words:

Six at - he has never jumped so badly. "

This benefited Michael Jung, who was able to maintain his individual result through the entire test and thus won individual gold. He is third in a row with Virginia Leng and Zara Phillips - as reigning individual world and European champions. Due to the extensive lead after the site, the German team kept the lead despite the drops and won team gold.

The second and third places in the individual ranking also went to two German riders: Sandra Auffarth won the individual champion at her first championship after the young rider's time. Bronze won Frank Ostholt, who benefited from a refusal of his wife Sara Algotsson-Ostholt's horse. This slipped to twelfth place.

The riders of the British team each had one obstacle drop and thus lost the second team rank. France took it after all the team riders made no mistakes in the jumping competition.
