Niklas Jonsson (born May 31, 1969 in Piteå ) is a former Swedish cross-country skier .

Career

Jonsson, who started for the Piteå Elit SK , won the bronze medal with the Swedish cross-country skiing relay at the Junior World Championships in 1988 in Saalfelden . The following year he won the silver medal over 10 km at the Junior World Championships in Vang . He made his debut in Moscow in January 1990 in the World Cup and finished tenth in the 30 km freestyle. In the 1991/92 season he came under the top ten four times in the World Cup singles and reached 12th place in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , he achieved 13th place in the pursuit race, seventh place over 30 km classic and fifth place over 10 km classic. In the following year he finished at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1993 in Falun, 30th place over 30 km classic and sixth place with the relay. His best individual placement in the World Cup in the 1992/93 season, which he finished in 28th place in the overall World Cup, was sixth in the pursuit race in Ramsau am Dachstein . He was also the Swedish champion over 15 km. At the beginning of the 1993/94 season he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup with third place over 30 km classic in Bormio . In the further course of the season he achieved four top ten placements in the World Cup. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he came in 30th place over 10 km classic and 27th place over 50 km classic. At the end of the season he finished 11th in the overall World Cup and thus achieved his best overall ranking. After third place over 15 km classic in Tauplitzalm at the beginning of the 1994/95 season, he came six times in the points, including one in the top ten. At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 in Thunder Bay , he finished 14th over 10 km classic, 11th place in the subsequent pursuit race and fourth place with the relay. He finished the season in 18th place in the overall World Cup. In the following season he scored ten points in 12 World Cup appearances. He came in Štrbské Pleso with the third place 50 km freestyle again on the podium and finished 16th in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. Also in 1996 he became Swedish champion over 50 km. His best individual result in the 1996/97 World Cup season was sixth place over 10 km classic in Davos and at the end of the season he achieved 24th place in the overall World Cup and 17th place in the Sprint World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim in 1997 , he finished 30th over 10 km classic and 23rd place in the following pursuit race. In the 1997/98 season he took six World Cup points. In January 1998 he was second with the relay in Ramsau am Dachstein. He had the greatest success of his career at the season highlight, the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano . There he won the silver medal in the 50 km freestyle. He also achieved 25th place over 10 km classic, tenth place in the pursuit and fourth place with the relay. In the following season he reached four top ten positions in the individual World Cup and at the end of the season he was 18th in the Sprint World Cup, 14th in the overall World Cup and ninth in the Long Distance World Cup. His best results at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein were sixth place with the relay and fourth place over 50 km classic. At the Swedish championships in 1999 he won the relay. After finishing fifth in Kiruna and fourth in Sappada at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, he made it onto the podium for the fourth time in the world cup singles over 30 km in Davos. This was followed by placements outside the top ten and at the end of the season 27th place in the overall World Cup and tenth place in the long distance World Cup. His best individual result in the World Cup in the 2000/01 season was 22nd place over 10 km classic in Otepää . In his last active season 2001/02 he came in six individual participations in the World Cup, three times in the points. His best result was 16th in the 30 km mass start race in Ramsau am Dachstein. At the World Cup in Davos, he won the relay. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , he finished 36th in the 30 km mass start race, 28th in the skiathlon and 13th in the relay.
