The European Eventing Championships 2019 were held from August 28 to September 1, 2019 in Luhmühlen in the Lüneburg Heath . The event was the 34th European Eventing Championships .

organization

preparation

On the first day of the European Championships in 2017 , the World Equestrian Federation ( FEI) announced that Luhmühlen had won the bid for the European Championships in the pre-Olympic year 2019. This means that the European Championships took place again at one of the most experienced championship venues in Europe: Luhmühlen was previously the venue for the European Championships in 1975, 1979, 1987, 1999 and 2011 .

Implementation, venue, media

The general sponsor of the FEI, Longines , took over the title sponsorship of the CCI Luhmühlen in Luhmühlen in June and the title sponsorship of the European Championships in August / September 2019.

The Luhmühlen site park is located in the Westergellerser Heide, in the border area of the municipalities of Salzhausen (district Luhmühlen) and Westergellersen . This includes the cross-country course as well as the tournament and other preparation areas. The entire facility was extensively modernized in the run-up to the 2011 European Championships.

The FEI showed the entire championship on its paid live stream portal FEI TV. The German IPTV broadcaster ClipMyHorse also broadcast live from the European Championships from Luhmühlen.

German TV broadcast Sportschau reported in the first live from the field day, the final jumping summed up the ZDF as part of ZDF Sport Extra short together.

Time schedule

The European Championships began on August 28, 2019 (Wednesday) with the first veterinary examination and an opening ceremony. The start of the sporting program was the partial dressage test. This took place on Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The cross-country course had to be mastered as the second partial test on August 31 (approx. 10:00 am to 3:30 pm). On Sunday, the last day of the tournament, the participating horses had to undergo the second veterinary examination. The jumping competition was then held as the third sub-test. The European Championships then ended with the medal presentation.

Results

Intermediate result after the dressage

In the dressage arena of Luhmühlen, one of the newest couples in the starting field shone: Michael Jung took over the 11-year-old gelding Chipmunk at the beginning of the year. Although not initially intended for European championship horses, the couple was able to finish in second or first place from their second international start on every test they finished. With their second best joint dressage result, Jung and Chipmunk took the lead after the first partial test. An even better result would have been possible here, a clock disturbance in the step tour cost a few points. The single European champion couple from 2017, Ingrid Klimke and Hale Bob OLD , came second in dressage as in 2017.

In the team classification, the German team was able to ride out a lead of a good 17 minus points. Behind them, however, the field was close after the dressage: Between second place (Great Britain) and seventh place (Netherlands) there was not a ten minus point difference.

Intermediate result according to the terrain

Wall jump at the wave run (Cathal Daniels with Rioghan Rua )

In the run-up to the off-road day, course designer Mike Etherington-Smith, who works in Luhmühlen, estimated that he was expecting six perfect rider-horse pairs who would reach the finish line within the ideal time. But the good conditions thwarted his calculations: The day off the road was dry but not humid, the ground was ideal for a cross-country ride. So the allowed time of ten minutes and ten seconds turned out to be a solvable task and thus the off-road course was a bit too easy for a European championship. Instead of six, 20 riders came through the course without any further minus points.

In addition to some combinations of sloping hedge obstacles, which are almost absolutely necessary for a modern off-road course, also quite classic-looking off-road obstacles were put in the way of the riders and horses. A deep wall jump that had been buried for years was restored on the wave run. There the riders had to overcome a hedge jump either left or right over a corner immediately after the deep jump.

Bird obstacle in the third water complex (Camille Guyot with
Ulsan de Lacoree )

As a member of the Risk Managing Steering Group of the FEI, Etherington-Smith is an advocate of throwable obstacle parts at terrain obstacles; these safety measures were used on six obstacles. The three water complexes are always characteristic of the Luhmühlen area. At these European championships, a series of obstacles in the third water was a particular challenge: After a massive obstacle as a water jump, riders and horses had to master a 90-degree curve in the water and then overcome a "bird" sitting in the water. There were also five falls on this obstacle. Due to the water and the wearing of airbag safety vests, however, these went largely without a hitch. Laura Collett, who had been third so far, was among the fallen riders.

Michael Jung and Ingrid Klimke were able to hold the German double lead, both of them came through the off-road day without any new minus points. A somewhat unfortunate situation arose for Jung at the last water complex: The Spaniard Maria Pinedo Sendagorta, who had ridden in front of him, fell here in the bird obstacle and was crouching in her inflated airbag vest in the shallow pond water for a long time. Helpers could only lead them out of the water when Michael Jung arrived in the first part of the water complex that had been ridden through several times. In the course of this, an obstacle judge gave him hand signals that the rider couldn't classify.

The other places were different, the ranking of the remaining top group was mixed up in the terrain. Cathal Daniels, for example, improved from 13th to sixth. On the other hand, Kai Rüder fell from fourth place to 35th place. As in other tournaments, his horse Colani Sunrise had problems at the start. The gelding fixed himself on the first obstacle, climbed and did not want to enter the start box. As a result, Rüder lost a good 30 seconds, which could hardly be caught up in the otherwise problem-free off-road course.

Belgium slipped from third place to seventh in the team ranking after a fall of its team rider Laura Loge. For the Dutch, trained by Bettina Hoy, things didn't go well in the field either, only one of the four team riders crossed the finish line. Sweden and Italy are working their way towards the medal ranks (places five and four). France now took third place. The order of Germany and Great Britain did not change, only the gap narrowed slightly to a good 14 minus points.

Bottom line

Fractions of a second before the mistake that made them lose the individual gold medal: Michael Jung and Chipmunk FRH overcoming the jump of the third double combination
Presentation of medals, individual evaluation: Michael Jung, Ingrid Klimke and Cathal Daniels (from left to right)

At the beginning of the last day of the tournament the second "Horse Inspection" (veterinary medical examination) was due. There none of the presented horses was taken out of the competition. But five riders had already decided in advance not to start in the last partial test and had not even started the "Horse Inspection". Since this also affected four team riders, this also had an impact on the nations ranking: France and Ireland no longer had a result in jumping. For Spain and Austria the impact was less, as both teams were already in the lower ranks without a chance after the terrain.

Although there were quite a few faultless rides, the jumping course proved to be sufficiently selective to shake up the field in individual and team competitions. The allowed time of 84 seconds only caused problems for individual riders who were placed further behind, many top pairs master the course in well under 80 seconds.

Germany as host was allowed to start 12 pairs of participants in Luhmühlen. This included Jörg Kurb, who made his championship debut for Germany at the age of 52. He worked his way up from 40th place in dressage to 21st place in the final result with his 11-year-old gelding Entertain You , among other things with a faultless round in the jump- off. The 22-year-old Anna-Katharina Vogel also made her debut at a championship in the “rider” age group in Luhmühlen. The rider, who finished fourth in the individual at the Junior European Championships in 2013, was the fastest rider in the field with a time of 9 minutes 43 seconds. With her 12-year-old mare Quintana P , she made no mistakes in jumping after the terrain, so that she was able to bring her dressage result of 32.30 minus points to the finish. This enabled her to jump from 26th place after dressage to 14th place in the final ranking.

In the first half of the field, the eight minus points from Karim Florent Laghouag meant that France fell out of the medal ranks in the intermediate ranking. And the silver rank for the British riders did not seem certain either: While their individual rider Kitty King made no mistakes and finished the individual ranking in seventh place, the team riders were not lucky. Only Kristina Cook, who was beaten off the field after a refusal, also remained without mistakes. Her three teammates, whose results counted for the British team classification, each made one obstacle error. With that the tide had completely turned, now Great Britain threatened to drop out of the medal ranks. But also the Cadre Noir rider Thibaut Vallette made a mistake, and France finally flew out of the team medal ranks due to his mistake. The British riders, on the other hand, could breathe a sigh of relief, they were guaranteed team silver. Sweden also benefited: The faultless rides by Louise Romeike and Ludwig Svennerstål not only brought them to the individual places twelve and eight, but also secured Sweden the team bronze medal thanks to the French mistakes.

The mistake of Oliver Townend and his horse Cooley Master Class was not only annoying for the team standings. With his dressage result of 27.60 minus points he would have won the individual bronze medal, so he fell back to ninth place with his one obstacle error in jumping. Tim Lips and Thibaut Vallette also missed their medal chances in the individual. From France, however, the 33-year-old individual rider Christopher Six was able to make a name for himself, with his gray gelding Totem de Brecey not only achieved what is by far the best joint result for the couple. Her result of 29.20 minus points led her to fourth place in the individual ranking.

The chestnut mare Rioghan Rua and her 22-year-old Irish rider Cathal Daniels also achieved a joint best result . Both were able to maintain the dressage result of 29.00 minus points over the entire European Championship. Daniels, who was already individual European pony eventing champion in 2012 and, together with Rioghan Rua, individual vice European junior champion in 2014 , won the individual bronze medal in Luhmühlen.

Ingrid Klimke started the course as the penultimate starter. Unlike at the 2018 World Equestrian Games , she managed a flawless ride with Hale Bob . Since their team colleagues Kai Rüder and Andreas Dibowski had also succeeded in doing this, the German team victory was already clear with an enormous advantage over Great Britain. Thus Michael Jung could concentrate entirely on the individual evaluation. With Chipmunk he couldn't make a jumping mistake to win the individual ranking. But a double combination of two oxers was the couple's undoing, a pole fell. It stayed that way, Jung was thus an individual silver medalist. The European champion of 2017, Ingrid Klimke, defended the individual European title.
