organization

preparation

The FEI announced in June 2012 that the 2015 European Eventing Championships will take place in Blair Castle. Every year at the end of August, Blair Castle is the venue for an equestrian event, the Blair Castle Horse Trials, the program of which includes a 3 * long-term eventing test (CCI 3 *) .

The European Championships were held in the UK for the twelfth time, but it was a first for Scotland .

Implementation, venue, media

The FEI's general sponsor , Longines , also sponsored the European Championships at Blair Castle. The dressage and jumping tests as well as the constitutional tests took place on the main square in front of the castle. The terrain course was set up on areas west of the castle, the route and obstacles were designed by Ian Stark .

The medal handover took place with the participation of Queen Elizabeth II .

On September 12, 2015, WDR television broadcast 70 minutes of the day of the European Championships on German television . The decision on the following day was broadcast live on the internet at sportschau.de, while the sports show on the television station Das Erste showed a short report on the evening of the day. The FEI broadcast the entire tournament for a fee on its website.

Competitions

General

Since 2005, the European Championship has been held as a long test in a new format - dressage, cross-country, jumping - at CCI 3 * level. The team and individual scores are held in a joint test.

The starting field in Blair Castle consists of 65 starters and was thus slightly larger than in Malmö two years earlier. Two other riders dropped out before the dressage test (withdrawn before the constitutional test or failed the constitutional test). With eleven nations, the number of teams had increased slightly compared to 2013 (ten teams).

The nations were allowed to send four team riders and two individual riders each with one horse to the European championships. Great Britain as host was able to assign twelve starting places.

Time schedule

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, the final of "Kent and Masters Arena Eventing" began at 9 am local time, a national series of jumping competitions with terrain obstacles integrated into the course (obstacle heights of up to 90 or 100 cm). This as well as several general tests of the following days (national hunter and jumping competitions) carried out in the "Banvie & Tilt Arena". Further framework tests took place in the "Tummel & Country Fair Arena", for example Open Arena Eventing on September 9th from 10 am and Mounted Games on September 12th .

The European Championship program started with the first constitutional examination on the afternoon of September 9th, followed by the opening ceremony. The partial dressage test followed on September 10th and 11th, and the cross-country test one day later.

On Sunday (September 13th) the last partial test, the jumping competition, was on the program. After this, the European champions in individual and team competitions were determined. The partial tests lasted from morning to afternoon and took place (with the exception of the cross-country test) in the main stadium of Blair Castle. The tournament ended with the medal handover and a closing ceremony.

Intermediate result according to the terrain

“A real old-fashioned cross country course, difficult, jumping a lot, not very technical,” said Dirk Schrade, assessing the course at Blair Castle. The ground of the track was very slippery due to the heavy rain that started at the beginning of the stage. During the test, obstacle 22, a deep jump, was removed from the course after three riders fell here.

The German team was the only team besides the sixth-placed Spaniards to bring all the team riders to the finish of the cross-country course and was able to extend their lead to over 40 minus points. The time allowed in the field was tight (also due to the weather conditions), so that only three pairs of participants managed to stay within this framework. Isabelle Taylor succeeded in doing this, working her way up from 26th to third place. Michael Jung, with his chestnut gelding Takinou, who was only eight years old, also remained in the area without minus points and thus took a clear lead in the individual standings.

Bottom line

Four faultless rides by the team riders once again consolidated the lead of the German team in the last partial test, which won the team gold medal with a lead of over 50 minus points. France, whose team came third, secured qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games with this result .

In the individual ranking, nothing changed in the first two places: Michael Jung defended his European title, the individual world champion of 2014, Sandra Auffarth, secured the silver medal.
