Blair Atholl (from Gaelic : Blàr Athall) is a small village in the county of Perthshire in Scotland . It is 35 miles north of Perth at the confluence of the Tilt and Garry Rivers on a relatively flat spot in the center of the Grampian Mountains . The Gaelic place name Blair (from blàr = flat, even) indicates this. Atholl, which means "New Ireland", is the name given to the area around the place. The place is in the Cairngorms National Park .

traffic

The place is on the A9 , the longest road in Scotland, which leads from the Falkirk council area in central Scotland to Thurso on the northern tip of Scotland. Until the 1980s, the road ran directly through the town.

Blair Atholl owns a train station on the Highland Main Line between Perth and Inverness .

North of the village is the Pass of Drumought (Scottish Gaelic: Bealach Druim Uachdair ), which is the main connection between the Highlands in the north and the Southern Uplands .

tourism

In terms of tourism, the place is looked after by the "Blair Atholl Area Tourism Association", which includes the places Bridge of Tilt , Blair Atholl, Bruar , Calvine , Killiecrankie and Struan . The Atholl Estates Ranger Service also supports you in planning your vacation.

Because of its central location, the place is mainly used by hikers and mountain bikers as a starting and ending point for tours in the Highlands. Because of the abundance of fish in the rivers, it is also very popular with anglers. Two hotels ("The Atholl Arms Hotel" and "The Bridge of Tilt Hotel") as well as numerous guesthouses and bed-and-breakfast options also reflect this importance. There is a large campsite on the grounds of Blair Castle , where the Blair Atholl Jamborette international scout camp has been held every two years since 1946 .
